View Full Version : Saw an XXL Egg in Person (Pics)

I wasn't even sure if they were selling the xxl egg as they made an announcement last year or the year prior with a teaser pic, but didn't hear much after that. Anyways I was in my local ace getting some propane for the camper and saw this beast out on the floor :-D. Figured I would share.

Holy crap is this thing huge in its overall size. I have an XL and this one makes it looks quite tiny. They had an XL next to it and I tried to get some decent shots. I talked to the folks there and they sold one to the guy in the photo.

Now I don't see any real reason to have one this large other than simply for bragging rights. You could get almost 4 XL's for the price they are selling it for, which the ACE folks were the ones to point out. Still was fun to see in person. I'd take one if you gave it to me :becky:

I don't know the official weight and I'm sure the specs are up online. On the glazed cement floor it rolled relatively easy. I wouldn't want to move this sucker more than once :biggrin1:. The lid opened without any trouble. A tad heavier than the xl.

Really the smoking capacity isn't that great. You can see in this pic a guy who bought one and only has about 6-7 butts on it.

Tried to get some reference for the grate size with my dumb hand

Another reference shot

Here is the xxl on the left and xl on the right. Not the best comparison pic, but in person the xxl is visually so much larger. If you took the guts out of the xxl I could get in it, crouch down and you could close the lid without any trouble:loco:

That's incredibly expensive for an already expensive line of cookers. I would love to see one in person though.

Yeah I totally agree. I wouldn't have my xl egg if it didn't only cost me about $100 when I bought it.

I am quite content with my XL but I would like to see one.

Thank you for the pictures.

Right now I can fill my large with a 7lb bag of charcoal. I wonder how much charcoal this would use to fill the firebox and while cooking?

I saw one in Bass Pro a while back. They are massive but IMO if someone is looking for cooking space a Shirley Fabrication trailer model is much cheaper and easier to move around. When my wife saw the price of the BGE she was more than happy to let me order the SF Trailer...lol

Ha! Funny you say that. One of the guys at the store was telling me about a truck he bought back in the 70's brand new for less than $4000 :biggrin1:.

The dealer near me had one on display last weekend. They are all pretty-and too fragile- looking.

I could build a bunch of UDS Drums for that much. ;-) I'd rather proudly own a Shirley.

It does look pretty nice though.

Yeah can't beat a Shirley. Love mine :becky:. I would like to see an xxl in action, but for that price I don't see many buyers.

I agree with all above. It would only be a bragging rights cooker IMO. I know some people who will have to have it for that very reason. Makes me really appreciate the value in a Shirley or Lang. :)

Well that's all fine and well for you folks but I have to know what size that handle is so I can have them ready when they come to my website to order a handle. Maybe I will just have to buy one..... Ouch, stop it, sorry honey. No, I didn't say that. We'll talk later.....

I suppose if you were going to mount it in a built in outdoor patio setup where you may not have room for other cookers it could work out nicely. If you compare it to some of the expensive built in propane grills people put in islands the price matches up much closer to to those. That must be the target audience.

I wouldn't think even with it being larger the charcoal consumption would really jump up very much. I'd take one if it were given to me!

I saw one in person and decided on the spot that the large was big enough. So, after a little negotiating I took it home.

It's really cool to see but that is where it ends for me. Thats one expensive cooker.

The two egg dealers near my house each have one of these on display. Think they were about the same price. Did you notice the special band with the serial number on it? I think it said #### out of 5000. So I think they made 5000 initially to see how they'll sell. I'd imagine most of them are sitting on display like this and are being used as attention getters.

Wow. So much bashing of the egg. If you like it and you have the funds more power to ya.

I think comparing the XXL egg to a SF cooker is like comparing apples and oranges.

Seems to me this site is becoming an advertising site for Shirley Fabrication.

Sorry, I never meant to hijack this thread by mentioning SF. I was just saying the XXL BGE was pricey. No offense was intended. I have several friends who are all about BGE's and I have had some great food from a BGE. I only meant that for my particular needs the XXL BGE was not a fit.

Advertising is paid. The comments about Shirley's products are not.

Understand the difference?

Just comments from guys that appreciate good products.

The BGE has it's place. I've got a XL. For the price, the XXL doesn't seem worth it to me. Just MHO.

Yeah no different than people who love their stumps, lang, humphries, jambo, etc and express it here.

It would be fun to compete on that xxl. Have it safely mounted on some type of trailer where it wouldn't crack and just use that for all meats. Hopefully you wouldn't have to reload charcoal.

Then it would also be considered to be a site advertising Weber, Primo, Green Egg, and many other manufacturers going back to the Bandara.

Anyone that can't see SF is getting free advertising on this site is blind. Don't get me wrong, their product looks great and I'm sure they are great guys, but read my first sentence again.

I saw one of the Limited Edition ones at an Eggfest in June, I think it's still in the store. There is no question it's huge, and heavy I'll bet.

That's the one egg size I don't have, and I don't see that changing. The grid size is not that much bigger than my otg 26.75, and my ranch kettle has nearly double the cooking space. This is my opinion here, but I see no value in this experimental egg.

Just for the heck of it, I Googled "XXL Egg in use". There was only one picture and that was a factory demo at an eggfest.

You know, I love how the O.P. posted this up so we all could see it, and if nothing else marvel at its sheer size. Not sure why folks have such a need to say why they would not have one, why it is a bad value, why other makes are superior.

I think you'd have to weigh 600lbs to lean on the XXL and knock it over.

I was about to say, if you need a big kettle, why not just get a ranch kettle? Bigger, way cheaper, and though I've never used either, I'm willing to bet you can turn out just as good a product.

And it's a Weber...:clap2:
