Was reading this article in GQ(via facebook) and they have method for smoking ice.
http://www.gq.com/life/food/201407/grill-guide
They make a frozen ice block, smoke it, re freeze the now smoked water and use it in drinks
This has to be a joke.

Kind of weird but might be good in a bloody Mary
Have no idea why they would start out with ice when they can just smoke water to start and save themselves a big step. Same basic recipe as Liquid Smoke.

More water would be exposed to the smoke if it is dripped in to another pan. If you just fill the pan with water, the stuff at the bottom doesn't get the exposure that the surface water gets.
I'm not suggesting I know exactly how effective smoked ice is, but I can see a difference between melting ice and just starting with a pan of water.

I've heard it's gaining popularity in drinks in more trendy places. I've never tried it, but I'm also not trendy either.

Maybe I should start selling the ice I use when I cold smoke cheese! That stuff looks really smoky when it's all said and done.

I don't find any thing ridiculous about it, I'd love to try a manhattan with smoked ice...

too much work for me. i just use 2 drops of hickory or pecan liquid smoke in my morning hillbilly bloody mary's (1 part beer, 1 part tomato or v-8 juice, liq. smoke, lime juice, worcestershire, louisiana habanero sauce, montreal steak seasoning, ice with season all and cracked black pepper on top).

Meh, there's an easier way.
1. Scrape the lid of your WSM into a bucket.
2. Fill bucket with water.
3. Stir really well.
4. Pour bucket into ice cube trays.
5. Freeze.

That is an interesting idea. I have a cold smoke generator from Smoke
Daddy and I will have to try that. If it's gross, I just won't do it again. I am always looking to smoke different things. It probably would be good in a Bloody Mary.

I've done it once, and it was SUPER nasty.
Tasted a lot like licking an ashtray. I used the cubes in whiskey.
Made it about the halfway point and threw the drink in the sink. Nasty.

Smoked ice isnt a new concept, GQ is very late jumping on this. We were doing it in mixology classes in culinary school in mid 90's. Even learned of an ice distillation method for spirit. (Hope that doesn't catch on). Think smoked beer next time and the ice think won't seem so strange.

Smokiness just happens to be one of the olfactory identifiers in anything, oaked or barrel aged, from spirits to wine and even beer.
