My old uds has a lid that wraps around the whole lip of the barrel which created a near air tight seal on it. I'm going

try to put a rubber seal around the inside of the uds flat lid.... Unless one of my brethren has a better idea

To me it looks like that lid / barrel combination uses a bolted ring to keep the lid in place. Rven using the ring without the bolt will keep the lid closed for cooking.

Never seen one like that. Is there a way you can spread the lip of the top out a bit? If so do that and seal with RED rtv sealant. It's food safe the black isn't. If you can spread the lid lip out, line the top of your drum with wax paper, then apply the sealant to the lid channel. Then carefully place on the wax paper on the drum. Make sure to have no gaps in the wax paper, that sealant will stick it to the drum!

Good suggestions. My old barrel was a much heavier steel, my new UDS lid takes a little "persuasion" to get it seated.

Once persuaded, it seals well enough to snuff out the coals.

Is the lid warped or is the drum out of round at the top? If the drum is out of round just squeeze it together the oblonged way to bring it back to a round shape. It may take a few times to get it round again but it will work. I had to do it with mine. If the lid is warpped you can use the clamping ring like was mentioned above. The one I have has a lever to close it instead of the bolted one. This also happened to me. My lid fit perfect after I made the top of the drum round again by the above technique but in my haist to get it seasoned and cooking on it, I warped it when I welded the exhaust stack on. I knew the lid could possibly warp buy welding the stack continuously, and not letting it cool between tack welds, but I took a chance any way. Guess what.....it warpped. I should have tack welded it in a few places, let it cool, tack welded it, let it cool, and repeated the process until it was all welded. But now with the clamping ring it seals up nicely. Once you get over the need to peek at your food continuously it's not a big deal to remove the clamp when needed.

I use the band to hold the lid
to the drum.
I was going to throw it out,
I'm glad I didn't, the lid is crooky.
I use a vice grip to tighten it up if need be...
but mostly that ring is GTG

Try to locate a dome lid. 55 gal= 22.1/2 kettle lid.

It's just flat out warped. Get a new lid or do the dome lid...personally I would get both. It's not worth fighting with a warped one.
