Going to be getting stationed in Japan going to be using my kettle more for smoking because of the limited space in base housing, so i was looking to upgrade my kettle. First i was just going to get the hinged grate just to be able to add more chunks of wood on longer cooks. Then i seen the cast iron grates and i really wanted to add some CI to the kettle! So i narrowed my choices down to the gourmet system with the CI searing plate or just go straight CI. Seeing what the Brethren thinks the best upgrade is. Thanks in advance you guys rock I get some much information on here!!

I have a Stok CI and love it but I use my kettle more for grilling than smoking. I think with the removable center that smoking with it would be easy.

i have the stok grates also. awesome for grilling. picked them up over the weber since the entire grate is cast iron as opposed to the weber having steel outside.

never tried smoking anything on the kettle though. it may be tough with the opening only being in the center. but...that center opening is awesome since it fits a chimney. brilliant design.

I will echo execoll and say Thank you for your service.

I've got the Weber Gourmet system with the cast iron insert and really enjoy it. Nice thing is it gives you options for additional inserts as well like the griddle, pizza stone or veggy basket. I like the option of using it or replacing it with the standard grate option that will also come with the kit.

It's also nice to be able to remove just the insert and set my chimney in there for starting the coals.

Ditto this, I've been eyeing up the craycort grate system for a while now. I like that i can remove the grill in 1/4 pie wedges, and have the ability to remove all 4 so there is just a skeleton frame left. You can also replace them with other types of inserts like pizza stones, veggie baskets, a chicken stand, or griddle.

I will probably pull the trigger in a week or so. I haven't found anything that seems as versatile while still allowing easy access to the edges.

I thought about one of those options, but I set my kettle up differently all the time, so wanted a bit more flexibility. I found a really cheap replacement cast iron grate at Home Depot for a gasser. It came in two pieces and each fits a couple steaks. I can put it on the stock grate or if I really want it to rip, put it right down on the coals. Works well and is small and out of the way when I don't want to use it.

Edit: pretty sure this is it...I remembered it being cheaper than $30, but maybe it wasn't.

I had the Craycort on a 22.5 Performer for over a year. Bought a 26.75 OTG a few months ago and barely put it together before I ordered the 26.75 Craycorts. They are awesome!

I Wish I had purchased the 26.75 and the CI grates to start...
