What was the project?

The project was putting a second grate in. The original is 36 by 18 but I wanted more space. I'm starting to save for a new smoker but in the meantime this 75 dollar investment will do till I can get what I really want.

Looks good. Did you weld in brackets or do it another way?

Since the walls are only 2/8 thick I just drilled the brackets in and mounted with bolts. Is a solid seal, no leaks. It was a pretty quick process.

Thanks. I'm thinking about a second shelf on my Longhorn, and I don't have a welder (or the knowledge and ability to weld), so I'll probably be bolting too. Good to know that should work.

Cool. Post a few pics of the rack and bolts and brackets - may help others who wanna do similar. How many bolts are supporting it? Did you get the shelve made for you by a welder or did you make it?

There's two bolts supporting it. I ordered the shelf from tejas smokers. They messed up the first order so they replaced it with an grate with an extra inch almost on each side to my liking. the one I ordered would've fit fine. It's 11 x 37 now. I'll take some pictures when I get home later.

I ordered the grate from tejas smokers for 43 with free shipping. They have a bunch of different sized grates too. The 2 inch angle iron was cut at a metal shop by my house. They had a bunch of inch square tube on their scrap shelf so I scooped that up to extend the brackets from the walls of the smoker. I cleaned the walls up so I could make all my marks. To drill I just used a 1/4 inch cobalt drill bit. I'd like to get something to cover the ends of the bolts to give it a cleaner look inside. For now though it's completely functional and looks like it'll work out great. All in all a 75 dollar investment and a couple hours of work.

Sorry about the sideways upload, I don't know what the deal with that is.

If you plan on sliding the grate out to load / unload, do you plan to add stops so the grate doesn't tip?

I threw some frozen stuff on it to see my clearance plus what it would handle like it actually didn't have to be pulled out much to load and unload food. I think its because how far up the lid opens.
