I found an old steel milk crate for 10 bucks. I done a few mods to it, like welding some legs. Now sits up 4" off the ground. Which I figure will give me a little extra bottom clearance for ash. I also added a handle.
Dimensions are - 11" x 17" which works ok in the barrel.
Was going to give it a test burn but it is pouring out.

Looks good, as long as it's all steel and no zinc or galvanized coating on it. Nice find.

That is a good question on the zinc or galvanized.
I know the panels are constructed of heavy gage 3/16" diameter and 1/14" diameter steel wire.
All I am seeing is mostly rust with a little green paint. That's why I wanted to give it a test burn and see what it looks like after.

Burn the crap out of it and you'll be fine....

I saw a thread elsewhere who used an old milkcrate

I use on in my Lang 60 when I burn charcoal and wood chunks. I put some expanded metal on the walls to ensure that the coals don't fall out. It works great.

I was looking at tacking some expanded metal to the basket also. Good to hear it works great.
