Sorry to be the harbinger of bad news....but get used to it brethren. It's gonna keep going up. Drought for two years in the midwest and texas is catching up.

Well, when you buy from a local market, that is what you get. I buy from a meat shop that caters to restaurants. But, they are not cheap right now either, running up to mid $3's

Ungraded means the store is relying on the ignorance of the customer. You did the right thing.

We are paying 2.99 for Choice around here.

Briskets are normally expensive in Mississippi so I am used to it.

I love to smoke for the quality time and cervesas- a chiminea with a purpose. But I really prefer grilled to eat. I see a lot of juicy Lucy's chili tacos enchiladas etc etc made from hamburger b

I wouldn't buy an ungraded brisket unless it really looked great, but not at that price.

BTW, 14 lbs isn't medium sized, not that it really matters.

My boyfriend used to live in Florida and he calls Publix "Pubix" -- pronounced "pew-bix"...

Southeastern Massachusetts, Bj' s wholesale, is getting $5.99 a pound. Same at many other local stores. Went to a local meat house and they were cheaper but the brisket was so thin it was like a meat curtain. I had to leave.

3.74 at our RD. actually found 2 textbook 15lb'ers without sorting through a dozen garbage packers.

Im flexible with prices, but it better be a good looking brisket.

Choice at the Kroger by my house last weekend...$1.99 lb. Got a 14lb wet aging in the fridge. :-D

On another note...newbie from Dallas smoking on a Vision Kamado. Happy to be here!

What is medium sized then?

Probably 8-10 lbs.

Briskets over 15 lbs used to be fairly common but in the last couple of years they've been harder to find. I prefer cooking briskets in the 12-15 lb range but I've been having trouble getting them much bigger than 12 lbs.

Bought 2 14+ pounders at Costco _Overland Park KS) last week, choice grade, 3.79/lb. With tax, the 2 pieces were $120. Hope I don't screw them up.

Choice grade FLATS at Costco were $6 and change.....

Restaurant Depot Today: $3.99/lb for Angus "Superior" (which means Choice) Packers. Slim pickings though...most had very thin flats. Had to dig through a few cases to find what i was looking for.

I would call 14 lbs packer medium sized. I frequently buy 18 lbs and never lower than 14. I do live in cattle country so maybe I'm spoiled?

I struggle to even find a cookable packer brisket in Memphis.

Costco claimed they quit selling them. Other meat markets in town didn't have any (not even packing companies).

Sam's claims they sell them but were out. So I went to Costco to get some ribs, and lo and behold they did have some packers, and they were an absolute joke.

They had tons and tons of fat that should've been trimmed even for an untrimmed brisket, and the largest point I could find was the size of a cheap tiny strip steak.

Needless to say, I left not only brisket-less, but pretty pissed. It's getting ridiculous. I shouldn't have to order brisket online and pay hundreds of dollars just to get some decent meat.

Ughhhh.

You need to check out Super-Lo (Also their Stepherson's market on Macon) and CASHsaver stores. They carry CAB brand and often have sales. Yesterday Stepherson's had two full packers, both around 12~14 lbs, for 4.19. A few weeks ago CASHsaver ran a special on briskets for 2.98 (Plus 10% at checkout which is their gimmick) but still, at 3.28/lb for USDA choice CAB it was a good deal for Memphis. The butcher at Stephersons will order for you too if you ask when their out.

I try to do a heads up thread when I see the ads like I did for this one:

Just pop into Smart and Final/Cash and Carry. I looked Sunday and I think they were at $3.59lb.

Well everyone's wages need to go up dramatically to correspond with these crazy price increases. What's the inflation been on meat in the past 5 years? like 25% a year?

Here in the Sacramento area we average around 3.59 to 5.29 a pound for them (depending on quality)

Hmmm - do you think the judges will know the difference between chunk roast and brisket?

Awesome, thanks for the heads up on that. I'll have to check those 2 places out to see what I can find, if it's not too late for the weekend.
