Just got word on the pay off for the Boone County Fair BBQ contest in Columbia this year.

$300.00 GC
$100.00 First place!!!

WTF!!! The entry fee is $ 150.00 Meat Cost $ 130.00 !! If you don't win GC it is a losing proposition.

Somebody needs to get a clue!!

I guess they want to find out who really cooks "just for fun"

What a shame.

Wonder if the entry is refundable? I'm going to ask.

Hey, that's nearly double the Warsaw payout (which we will NOT be doing next year)!

I know from some of Minion's comments in previous threads that there are a lot of expenses in organizing a contest. Paying KCBS and insurance for instance, and the venue is probably not free to the organizers either.

I'm sure $100 for first in a catagory is what they've paid the last 2 years. They do(did) pay 10 places where a lot of contest only pay 5.

That said, it would seem that actively pursuing sponsors could raise the purse a little, especially the GC.

I love doing the contests, but not that much! I planned on going but You just made up my mind. I'm out! I paid $175 for Okie Joe's! That would be worth it. The payout is more doable. And so is GAB.

I have no belief that I'd win in Columbia anyway but the principle of the thing is that cook teams pour tons of cash and effort into their craft. To only pay someone $300 for winning GC in that nice field of teams is almost a slap in the face.

Yep, it's Sugar Creek for us next year too unless Cliffy gets some decent sponsors.

Heck, that little unsanctioned contest at the VFW in Fulton has only an $80 entry and has a 300 dollar GC. I don't understand unless KCBS is taking most of it

How large are the spaces at Sedalia supposed to be?

Here's the reply I got back from Mike McMillen about the payouts:

Jeff,

You're partially correct. We pay the top 10 in each category (first place is $100... 10th place is $10). We also pay Reserve Grand Champ, 3rd & 4th overall.

Our goal is to give as many opportunities as we can for everyone to win something.

We kinda tossed around an idea this weekend that I'd like your opinion on...

Being's as it seems the contest isn't going to pay enough prize money to attract some of you guys that originally planned to come, we might have an alternative solution. We make up our own grand prize by collecting $10.00 from those teams that wish to participate, and best overall finish of those that got in would take the money. If only 20 teams out of 40 got in, with that 20 teams at $10.00 a team makes an extra 200.00 in someone's pocket. It wouldn't make us rich, but it may help defray some expense and help some of you to get back into the contest.

Just a thought.....

I'd be in Gary. I'd just be donating my $10 but if it helps, I'm for it.

Wayne tried to do the same thing at Sedalia but no one took him up on it. Bet he forgot all about that side bet idea after about 4:30 pm yesterday!

Just as an FYI, I was surprised to find an email from Mike in my inbox today:

Jeff,

Just wanted to drop you a note and let you know that I'm trying to get additional sponsorships for our BBQ Contest. Any additional funding will go into prize money.

Yeah we're gonna be there. We have a sponsor for that one so it won't actually be so costly.

That's great news, Jay! Did he raise more $$$ or did he nix the idea of paying $10 to 10th place in each category and on up? Personally, I'd just pay top five and give a ribbon to 6 through 10 anyway.

Oops... just checked my email. Got the same message that the fair board voted to increase payout as long as there are a minimum of 36 teams signed up. Haven't seen how many are yet but I replied and asked that question.

It's not about the money Ed. It was just the principle of the thing. Especially given that gas prices have gone up 20 cents a gallon in the last two weeks or so here!

I agree. It's not about the money except to the organizers!!!! They ain't doin' it for nothing. Money, money, money. Be nice if for the love of BBQ, they would pay out what they take in. Ain't happenin'.
