I was at a Meijer Thrifty Acres store this afternoon.

Pork butts were priced at $3.79 per pound. If you plan on purchasing some butts you may want to jump on them now.

Local prices here were 2.79/lb. for the last several days.

$25 for a 9lb. pork butt, I'll pass.

Waiting on prices!

I got outraged last night at Sam's.. $2.48/lb for pork but and $2.06/lb for the case pricing.. I made a thread about it yesterday even.

I thought it was Sam's but someone made it clear it was the entire pork market--skyrocketing.

I guess I should go buy a case of pork butts from them before it goes up any higher..

Time for some cost of living adjustments... if you ask me.

I heard one big reason for the meat prices going up is all the exporting we're doing. Pretty soon we'll be a third world country where we cannot afford to eat what we farm, and will barbecuing dogs and cats.. (looking at my dog "Pepper" now.. hrm.. what rub would be tasty.)

You can also thank the "tree huggers" for all the corn used for the alcohol (10 %) that is in all our gasoline now. What is left goes for feed at a greatly increased price to the meat producers. Alcohol is supposed to be drunk, not power our vehicles, and ruin them in the process. :yield:

Blessings,

If you are in Houston like I am, you can still get picnics for $1.29 per lb at Food Town. They ran them at .99 per lb for quite a while, but went up a couple of weeks ago.

Picnics work for me as well as, if not better, than butts.

I wish I could find some butts at 99¢ a pound! I usually always find em in between 1.50 and 2.25.

The high pork prices are being driven by an outbreak of "porcine epidemic diarrhea virus" (PEDV). It'll probably be a little while for prices to get back down:

I put a post on here last week from Yahoo news about the increase in beef and pork prices. Last years drought effected the beef and now there is a virus hitting the piglet population. Eat more chikn!

They are 1.69 to 1.89 all the time around here. Go on sale for 99-1.40 fairly often.

Yeah the virus has caused most of the increase in pork. I have a friend who raises corn and cattle. He told me he's feeding as much corn as he can since it's so cheap right now and makes the cattle take on weight faster. Since there's not many folks raising cattle he's making really good money on them.

This is a serious virus that has our local pork producers here in Iowa very worried. I have a friend that houses 5000 hogs and he was telling me this virus can live in the mud and dirt up to 160 degrees before something kills it. THis is an extremely contagious virus. They did some tests and found that even trucks traveling in the rain from Nebraska to Iowa still had the virus on the tires. The only way they have of fighting it now is by building immunity in the young, but they figure it may be two years to rid of it.

This virus causes severe diarrhea and kills the young pigs quickly.

ah ship, deep freezers are low right now, in time for meat price hike. I have four butts left in the freezer, two nicer ones from the deli. If its as much as 2.50/lb at sams hate to see what the price is at the deli! May have to go to sams and stock up before prices get crazier. Ground chuck is pretty much 5/lb here in central, Il. Meat seems to be cheaper down south, esp Texas...

Thank Obama and the environmentalists who think global warming is a problem directly related to CO2. So they mandated alcohol in gasoline - corn being the source of the alcohol. Never mind that gasohol gives lousy gas mileage and the CO2 emission is as high or higher per mile driven. Never mind that all food prices have gone up because of the rise in corn price. Never mind that the price of bourbon has gone up. Hey brethren we have taken it in the BUTT. Please vote your conscience and consider your wallet. Greybeard/

Holly $hit, I just stopped by Sam's today. The butts were 2.78/ lb. The briskets were 2.98/lb, didn't ever think I'd see a time when a dang butt was close to the price of beef.

It is nothing to do with the president or ethanol! Corn is relatively cheap for feed right now. Ethanol production is down as they can't get it railed away fast enough. Pork prices are higher due to PED, most farmers are experiencing loss of 10-25% of their heard, virus affects baby pigs if they have it they die. U need to look no further than lean hog futures printed in every paper daily across the country June lean hog contracts have reached over 1.30. It will take until at least fall for most of the PED virus to go away. No I'm not a tree hugger nor pro Obama. Just shooting u all the straight facts. It just is now starting g to effect the markets prices that I all see as fat hog numbers are down due PED. Which down sized the herd that is hitting the market now 6 months ago, as it takes 6 months from birth to dinner plate. Numbers will even be lower summer and start of fall for the hog hitting the market. Not trying to be a farker just giving u the facts report straight from the Midwest aka Iowa largest hog producing state in the country.

I was looking at selling some Lean hogs(futures), but i am no farmer the price has sky rocketed my buddy scalped a couple points the other day when they dropped like 2 points now there back up.. but you say it takes a year to recover from the virus outbreak? Humm maybe have to sell some options out a few months... but yes everything i read the price for BBQ this summer are going to be high, because of the virus.

Ahhhh guys, Stop yer whining....

Over here we are paying about US$5.00/lb for pork shoulder roasts ... even more for ribs. Enjoy your cheap pork and dont even mention brisket ...... and we are also paying $10.00/gallon roughly for petrol.

Stop moaning, hop in your car .... drive for miles and miles and buy as much pork as y'all can eat ..... and think of those of us who envy your low prices.

Absolutely took a hit myself. Quoted a long time customer his usual price per pound and then when I went to buy the butts they had gonme up 34%...needless to say i didnt make any money this time. Im gonna have to raise my prices accordingly. Might cost me some orders at first but at this point I cant pay people to buy my product. sucks...
