Going to Austin next week for a bbq tour and was wondering if anyone has suggestions on what part of town/hotels to stay. We were thinking the downtown area but wanted insight from someone who has been there.

When exactly are you going? SXSW is going on until the 16th. You aren't going to find a hotel room reasonably priced (if at all) anywhere south of Waco. Seriously, the further north you can stay the better for traffic and hotel price. I normally stay in Round Rock when in town. It makes everything fairly convenient while keeping the price down. Plus, it makes the trip to Round Rock Donuts for breakfast super easy. :-D If you are going during SBSW, you will probably have to go further north (maybe even as far as Temple).

We will be there the 21st through the 25th, still recommend north?

Still better pricing north along with better driving to anything but the city itself. You just won't have to go as far north as during SBSW. I would stay in Round Rock. It isn't too far north, but you get a lot more hotel for your money. It also puts you in closer proximity to Miller's (Belton) so that you can add that to your list and makes it easier to get to Louie Mueller.

I stayed at a Super 8 motel half block from Franklins. Heck, you can throw a rock and hit Franklins from there. Under the Highway and another 3 or 4 blocks are a lot of pubs etc if you like craft brew.

If you're making a BBQ tour stay in Round Rock is OK but look up Toll Road 130 to Lockhart , TX. BBQ capitol of TX. Small town with at least 4 great BBQ restaurants. They are Krauses, Blacks, City Market & Chisholm. Plus highway 130 is the only highway in USA with a legal 85MPH.

Try this one. Great location. Will have rooms after SX most likely.
