My Maverick 732 was delivered to me this evening :

Any advice on use or care of this device? I don't want to break it.

I have the 733. I didn't read the manual (typical) and it took me a little bit to figure it out, but I got it down now.

I took a quart size ziplock bag and cut a V from one side of the bag so I can hang it over it like a raincoat when it is wet out.

Do not submerge the mesh wires in water or kink them!

I've dropped it a few times and still works flawless. The only thing to be careful with are the probes. As mentioned don't kink them or pinch them in a lid or something. I wash my probes after each cook with warm water and dish soap and dry them quickly and store. Works perfect for almost 18 months now when I got it.

.. don't .. pinch them in a lid or something

Well how am I supposed to put the probes in my Mini WSM? Through the exhaust holes?

^^^^This!

You will also want to order 6' probes. May as well do it now. When one of the originals crap out, you will be prepared. Notice I said "when" not "if".

Wow, I just checked the price of those 2 probes on Amazon, $15 a piece..that's crazy.. 1/2 the price of the whole device.

Is there another source for probes that'll work with this device?

I think $5 per is fair. An ebay chinese one would be great!

Some perspective on my thinking: I pay $1 for an HDMI cable on ebay with free shipping. HDMI cables at the stores are $30-$60 or more dollars -- nuts!

What Mikemci said. Not if but when. Order several spares. When they break you won't really care. If you don't you will kick yourself. Please don't ask me how I know this.

The ties that hold the probes together when they first are opened fresh out of the box are twist ties, like you would find on a bread bag. They look like zip ties but are NOT zip ties. Do not use scissors to get them off.

Don't ask...

How should I feed the probes into my Mini WSM? Through the exhaust holes?

^^^ Yep, what he said! I've heard of people putting shrink tube where the wire goes into the probe to help protect it.

I heard it is bad voodoo to get water on the wires mesh and also be careful not to get kinkyed wires.
Try not to drop the item.

The wires short out real easy. Don't kink them or close them in the lid. If the wire gets too close to fire it can affect it too, so don't let the excess dangle in the grill. Don't drop it!

Congrats! Just got mine this week also its the remington version same exact thing as yours just has the remington name on it and it was a few bucks cheaper. Im curious to here some cheaper sources for probes because it sounds like we are gonna need them sooner or later

OK, Here's the deal. 1st, replace the batteries that came with it using alkaline or lithium AAA batteries. 2nd, make sure you Firmly seat the jacks in the sockets because they are rubberized to keep out moisture. 3rd'ly, Never crimp the wire leads. It's OK to run the leads over the top and put the lid on.

I've had my ET for about 2 years and have never had a problems with probes or units.

Just my .02

I've never looked for clones, would be nice if any cheaper imports are available. You will want to get the 6 footers too. It will be clearer to you after a few cooks how limiting the short ones are. I was in the middle of a brisket cook and the meat temp. came to a halt at 160 f. assuming it was in the stall, I just waited it out. After about 1 hour , and no change, I stuck my thermopen in the meat and I was at over 200 f. Ordered 2 meat probes and 1 pit probe, all 6 footers, on Monday. So now I have replaced the bad meat probe and have a spare ready for either of them for the next crash. There is a brethren here that goes by JoshCarey I think. He is somehow connected to Maverick. I believe that he mentioned in a post that he would warranty the probes but not sure. Maybe someone else can add to this. Otherwise it's been a fine tool for me, can't imagine a cook without using it anymore.

Apologies for the semi-thread-jack... I just got a 733, and used it today for the first time with a brinkmann gourmet. no exhaust holes. no silicone grommet. so...i ran it under the lid (which has a fair amount of space since that's the exhaust space). Is this a bad plan? worked fine today, but am i going to destroy the probes quickly that way?

And CONGRATS bbqgeekess!

Drill a 3/8" hole in the side of that mini........Exhaust holes can be too hot and bad for probes.......

Did you drill a hole and make a port? If so, how do you plug the hole for shutdown?

I do too. Have been using mine for 3 seasons! Just be gentle when setting the lid down. I have only roached them when getting water in the junctions.

Looks like one of these is going on my mini and Hasty Bake ! :)

Ohhhh... I got tons of mods in store for the Hasty Bake! It's gonna be an airtight adjustable height firebox minion smoker.. for unattended 12+ hour smokes. maybe I won't need a UDS, if I mod the Hasty right.

Sadly I tried this and my butt has stalled at 98.6F for quite some time now.

On a more serious note, a flame flare took out my grill probe. So not only water can take it out.

I have so many thermometers with probes that I have stashed in a drawer for backup uses. When I'm getting ready to grill it takes me ten minutes to find the right combination of the probe with the temp monitor I'm using. It's worse than a Rubik's cube.

Yes, it will. I have one in my UDS, and it works like a charm.

A small magnet will work.

Mount your grate clip to the underside of your rack when you have big meats on or no room to fit the clip. Mounting them too close to the meat will interfere with the temp it reads.
