I guess any cooker owners? I cooked steaks hot about a week ago. Well....been -0 for a week. Went out to my akorn today and opened it. The dome is flaking and its not good. Used fine steel wool to rub off the flakes. My question is what now? I cleaned out all the lump left in it. What else would y'all do before cooking on it? The cast grate is a mess also.

Is the flaking inside or outside?

Is the flaking inside or outside?
I re-read my post. Its not bad. It was flaking inside the dome. I'm sure its the creosote that bunt off. My post made it sound real bad! I ment it was flaking all over. I scraped the flakes off...cleaned out all the lump...and I'm going to re-season the grate. Just wondered how everyone did this when I can't do it outside? I don't mind gunk being on the grate. It'll cook/burn off. Just rjb some crisco on it so it don't rust. However...should I rub crisco on the inside of the dome or just wipe it with a wet cloth?

Whenever I get creosote build up, I just use a crumpled ball of foil and rub off the creosote. Heat up the grate, scrap them clean and start cooking.

OK thank you! You don't wipe down the inside of the dome with anything first? Like to get the powder out?

I use a hand broom to get rid of any flaky stuff

I get that from time to time on mine. Wipe it off and then re-season the lid. Because I seasoned the whole unit (grates, fire box, if it was on the inside it got a coat of veg oil.) When I run it hot I will get some "chipping" on the top which is the seasoning being burned off. I knock anything lose off and re-season and call it a day. I am not a huge fan of over complicating grill maintenance.
If it is the finish and you have exposed metal that is different but I don't think that is the issue. Keep on enjoying your rig.

This
I wouldn't worry about it. Keep on cooking. Might want to rub the inside to knock off the loose flakes from time to time.

I get those flakes from time to time. The aluminum foil trick is the one I use. Scrapes good without worrying about damaging anything. Then just light a fire.

So who is happy with their akorn for the price?
Who wishes they would have saved up for a higher end unit?

I love mine. After almost two years it operates just fine. I had a learning curve at first , still have a learning curve, but my acorn holds a temp for a long time. I occasionaly wipe the carbon flakes off the inside of the dome and season the grates and it works fine. Some day if I find a good deal I might go ceramic. But for now I dont see the need.

Love mine. Bought it 2 years ago and haven't touched my WSM or Performer since. I don't have to worry about wind & cold. Cooked a couple of butts for Christmas when it was -18 out. It ran at 225+- for 15+ hours with 1 vent adjustment that I probably didn't have to make. Still had hours of lump left in the firebox.

I should actually buy another one. I have been using mine at the restaurant 4-5 days a week for the last year. I cook chicken, ribs, turkey breast, wings and pork loin on mine. I have been doing butts and brisket the last few weeks since it has been cold. It is more efficient than my large smoker. The flaking is normal. You can scrape or rub it off into the ash pan and toss it out when you empty it.
To answer the question, you really can't really beat this cooker for the price point. I think even the BGE accessories will fit on it.

Mine cost $499 here ,that's actually around the price of our Weber onetouches with the lot.
I love ours, great temp control and very frugal on fuel, very forgiving when drinking and it gets awesome hot

I just use a paper towel to wipe down the flaky stuff. Don't spend much time at it cause your going to be doing that a lot of you go from low n slow to high temp cooks. I never cared for the cast iron grate, heavy, harder to maintain. So I made a weber grate fit mine and still use the upper swing grate. I would like to post better images, but imageshack decided to change there page so I can not get a direct link to post without sending you to imageshack. So if they keep this up, I'll be dropping them like I did the last "free hosting" site that started to require you to use farcebook or twatter to post.

I'm happy with mine. I wouldn't mind having another one to be honest. I'll never get a BGE or any other expensive type of ceramic grill. The akorn does the same thing. Might have to make a few mods to the akorn, but way cheaper.
I've been eye balling a stick burner if I ever can afford one. Been drooling over the Langs.
I'm happy with mine, but I wish it was a bit bigger. I often cook for a lot of people and find myself limited for space. I'm thinking of getting a WSM to use as a smoker and use this for my primary grill since it does get really hot.

Use an air compressor with a air hose nozzle, if you have one.... CAUTION....use eye protection...works for me.. :thumb:

I love mine except when I wanna cook ribs. I can only really get about 4 racks on in a holder vertically. I can fit 3 butts, 2 briskets more steaks and chicken bits then I have ever needed to cook at once. Does more burgers than my family will eat in one sitting and cooks 2 turkeys at once.
That said:
I wish I had a cover.
No real mods except a charcoal rack with a cast iron griddle as a diffiusor. Other than that Et732 and thermapen and you have Q' easy mode.

I really enjoy my Akorn. Very little clean-up. If the grill is grungy, knock off the big stuff, run the Akorn at high temp for a little bit, and re-season the grill. I don't worry about the dome very much. It gets hot enough to do pizzas in a flash, cook steaks like no other, then can run low and slow for 14 hours and not use half the fuel.
I purchased an iq110 temp controller that works great. I light the fire, run it within 50 degrees of the target temperature, turn on the iq110 set to target temp, and just about forget it. The Kamado Guru site has a section on Akorns and I learned a lot from that site about running the Akorn. It is a great value, IMHO.

Thanks for the input. I cook outdoors more than I do inside and fuel cost can add up. I've stalked the akorn at several local stores. What design do yall have, performer cart style, nest with side tables? Colors? Where did you get yours.

I bought mine at Lowes as I wanted the drop down metal side tables. If you have time, watch for sales as I have seen Kroger's selling them at $159 ( if they have one in stock actually). Folks have gotten them at that price.
