What do you use to spatchcock your turkeys?

After last years debacle, I'm thinking about going to Home Depot and picking up those shears they use for branches.

That's what I use. One of the small ones though, like for snapping branches off of shrubs. Not the big ol' tree branch with the long handle type. Works like a charm.

This might sound different but 8" bread-knife would cut through the bird fairly easily. Saw a Pit Barrel Cooker video and Noah used a bread knife to spatchcock a chicken.

I gave it a try and was surprised how easy it was to cut a bird in half. If you did not have a bread knife that poultry shears would be the way to go.

I keep a pair of Pruning shears like you use for gardening. They mow through chickens & turkeys like light saber.

Pampered chief shears.

Those things will cut though anything.

I'm not sure what these were meant for but, they sure part out a chicken with ease.
No name on 'em and I don't remember where I got them.

Never have used shears, always a knife, so I guess I don't know what I am missing out on.

Small pruning shears here – I also make a point to threaten my future son in law with them. They are an all purpose tool.

My Wusthof kitchen shears don't work well with turkey; I use a 10" chef's knife. Bigger shears and/or a cleaver are on my Christmas list.

Next time, Husqvarna or Poulan, or perhaps Stihl...

I've had some tough ol' birds before...

Seriously though, I've never spatchcocked anything so this thread is helpful.

Ive got shears but by the time you get the blades into the cavity, using the Pian the chook is spatchcocked and laying flat already.
Never use the shears now.
