I built my first UDS probably 3 years ago. I had some ideas that I wanted to try before I build the stainless model. So far I haven't found anything about it that I want to change. I put carriage bolts every 4 inches from the top down in 4 rows evenly spaced. I had bought a large stainless mixing bowl for an ash catcher that a weber kettle charcoal grate fits in perfectly. Then I rolled a ring of 1/4" rod for the lip of the mixing bowl to rest on, then rolled another ring to just fit inside the drum. I then cut it into 4 sections leaving a 2" gap and welded it to the other ring with standoffs so I can turn it and raise or lower it to any position easily. I use it to smoke and grill.

That's a great feature! My BPS drum has a higher setting for grilling... I like having the option.

so your charcoal basket is just a grate inside a solid mixing bowl? no holes in the bowl? i ask because i had just recently built my uds and used my small 14" weber grill as a coal basket. i had a problem with airflow. of the 3 intakes, 2 were wide open and 1 was 1/4 closed and then i could maintain 250F. if i capped one intake, the fire would choke.

idk if my fire was to small to draw a strong enough draft or if the grill was creating a restriction.

don't mean to hijack your thread but my ? seems relevant to your design

Yes just the bowl with no holes. It draws fine I have 4 intakes which are 3/4" pipe and usually I have 2 plugged off completely. I use the weber kettle lid and run the vent wide open.

Good idea and a great pic for documentation. Definately one of those times whe a pic is worth a bunch of words!
