I put fist sized Oak chunks on top charcoal cuz I want a heavy smoke reseason for an hour or so before Butt goes on..........Lid leaks a little all the way around but not bad

HaHa the firebox blistered the paint in no time! Rustoleum 1200* BBQ Paint.......but I did get it a lil warm for the re-season- hit 400* in cooking chamber..........just choked it down a lil and soon as temp gets down to 300* steady the Butts going on!

Seems to have settled in around 275* so it's time for my Butt to get a Smoke Bath.

my temp has dropped off to 230* and the firebox has blistered more so I'm losing too much heat off the firebox so I believe I'll be adding a layer to the firebox.

yup holding steady at 240* but I'd like to be able to do Hot n Fast at 300* too.... so adding a layer of steel to firebox and a charcoal basket are a must! and a cart.

Is that a mini uds with a side firebox? Looks cool.

3.5 hrs in - just flipped my butt- internal of 138*- had to add some charcoal - this thing has already burned thru as much charcoal as a 8 hr cook in my UDS but that'll get remedied somewhat when I add a layer of plate to the firebox........blistered paint = wasted heat!

Looking good!
I hate to do it, but I had to laugh at the blistering paint. I've been there way too many times...I get a brilliant idea and execute it nicely only to realize it doesn't work. All you can do at that point is laugh
That's a cool little smoker! I was planning on making a mini WSM, but this has me reconsidering. How heavy is it? Easily transportable?
SmittyJonz
08-11-2013, 05:53 PM
its not heavy but it's not really a mini - it's about 2/3rds size of a 55 gallon barrel and only about 1/2-3/4" smaller in diameter plus the smoke box.......it is a lil heavier gauge than a 55 gallon barrel

6 hrs in - internals of 164 -168* -smoker temp was falling off had to add charcoal - the fire box is too small and inefficient - it's about choked with ash and it only has access from top - so thickening walls by bolting 1/8-1/4" plate to outside for better efficiency and building a Burn Basket AND burning Lump ( less ash) will be the solutions..... Still not bad for $25!!!!
I'll sure be glad when my better/ faster (not Thermapen tho) thermometer gets here from ThermoWorks via Amazon.

Looking good! The first butt I did in my COS, I used almost 16 lbs of KBB trying to keep the temps up...needless to say, I've been modding the fark out of it ever since.
