This may be a stupid question, but here goes...how do you cope with a thermometer on the grate in your smoker, as far as it getting dark from the smoke? I am probably missing an important piece of information on this, as it would seem that the thermometer would get too smoked up to read. Thank you for bearing with me.

After each smoke I scrape the face of the grate thermometers with a razor blade. Comes right off. :cool:

Fine steel wool will work too. Or better yet get yourself a remote thermometer.

^+1 or soft scotchbrite pad and a little TSP (trisodium phosphate) in a spray bottle, look at Lowes, Home Depot or Ace Hardware.

some dish soap and a green scrubby pad works too
