View Full Version : Six Years to the Day....

this was my first post to the BBQ Brethren....

Howdy all....I just got myself a few 55 gal open head steel drums and intend to start my first UDS build this weekend after work. The info the forum has provided is invaluable.
But I need to ask about my lids...there is a rubber gasket surrounding the lip.
Should I take that off? I'm think I should because heat plus rubber surely equals meltage and tire-like burning! All input is most welcome!!!
I also wanted to post some pics of my current smoker; Weber 18.5" with some mods... It's small but gets the job done!!!

are you asking about the fire box pipe or the leg pipes?
fire box is black woodstove pipe...note the rust...
leg pipes are galvanized...note absence of rust...

Is that pipe around your fire basket galvanized?

Ive only been here a few months ( wish I would have found this place sooner) and your post are very helpful. You were one of the first to welcome and help me out to make sure I was t committing blasphemy by cooking chicken indirect on my drum. I was scared of all the drippings making bad smoke. Since then I have seen the light!! Thanks N8!
