I've completed the structural repairs to my old kamado. original post

The refractory cement just did not work. It did not have enough gluing capability. So as suggested the JB Weld is the way to go. JB weld is definitely my go to diy stuff.
My question now is about the rigidity of the of the securing rings. There is a lot slop in there due to the extra spacing left on the rivets holding the 2 rings together. Was it like this when new? Perhaps it was like this new due to sloppy tolerances needed for mating of the top and bottom surfaces. The rivets for the handle have no slop so the slop may be necessary.
Has anyone tried heating and flattening out these rivets to take out the slop?
