Hi all, i am just wondering what you use to season the inside of a UDS? I am in the building stage and have burned out the inside. DO i have to coat the inside with cooking grease or cooking oil to prevent rusting till i start cooking on it?

Ya you should use a towel and wipe the inside with some lard :biggrin1: that's what I did. Then fire that puppy up.

I rubbed mine down with crisco. That seemed to do the trick. I'd imagine you could spray or rub down with pam as well.

Thank you all. Ill go with the cooking spray till i am ready to fire it up in a week or so. Then wipe it down with the crisco and do the burn in. Thanks again

Yeah I put a light spray of Pam on the inside of mine. Did that every few days till I finished the build. Then right before I fired it up, I gave it one final light spray. I let it burn for 2 or 3 hrs, then threw on a couple of fatties. Worked perfectly! Btw, Pam makes a BBQ Grill spray, which is what I used. But regular Pam will work fine too.

I did the Pam spray also. Lit it up and went to bed. It looked great the next day.

I finished building, started the fire, cooded some ribs. (I didn't have any rust inside to start with)

I used the least expensive cooking spray I could find. It didn't take more than half a can to coat the inside. Then fired er up at wide open for a couple hours. Worked perfectly

I sprayed mine down with Pam then lit it off with some hickory wood & charcoal.
