Depends on location and how much packer brisket they sell.

I got used to .$99 per pound holiday specials in San Antonio, TX. But those days are long gone.

Yesterday I priced a nice choice packer at WalMart for $2.79. That's not too bad for beef right now. Prices are up a bit due to the drought which results in animal sell off and higher feed prices.

Through my distributor in Panama City:
$2.80 / lb for CAB packers--15-17 lb range.
Australian Wagyu packers--$5.45 / lb--size varies from 11-18 lb or so.

Dothan Sam's normally has choice (small) packers for about the same.

$2.18/lb here too for select, sometimes choice for same price. The local targets only sell choice and it's $2.48/lb.

They make up for it with their outrageous steak prices.

Was just at the butcher, here in Texas. US Prime Choice was $2.59. I bought a 13lb one for Chili. They looked at me funny when I asked em to grind it up for me; that was til the Manager came out and saw me. He is used to me doing that a couple times a year. I make chili, I do not like ground meat or the norm. For the Hirsch's meats I'm willing to spend a little more to make sure I get a quality piece of meat. Last 2 times to Costco and last 2 times to Kroger every piece of meat (4 Pork Shoulders and 3 briskets were horrid cuts filled with nastiness).

All of the reading I did here to make sure my brisket was perfect, and all I really had to do is peel back the lable, read the directions and all would be fine.

$2.48/lb Walmart/Sam's seems to be the norm around these parts. Never thought I'd be holding out for $1.99/lb sales for brisky's. Sad. It's just such a big cut of meat gets expensive real quick.

I did smoke up a couple shoulder roasts a couple weeks ago. Seasoned it exactly like I would have done a brisket. Pretty lean cut of meat but taste was excellent albeit a little dry. Will do it again for sure.

Walmart choice packers are around $2.50 per pound. The local butcher sells CAB brisket at about $3.29 per pound. Those are the best prices I can get.

All the chain supermarkets around me are ridiculous- $5 to $7 per lb!!!!! I called this small, independent butcher/grocery store the other day and they have them for $2.78/Lb!! So I picked 2 of them up. It pays to shop around. And don't discount the small guys- sometimes they can really come thru for ya.

Picked up a small CAB brisket last week for $2.78/lb. Around here that's a real bargain! I had to go through at least a dozen before I found one that wasn't hard as a rock. This one was nice & flexible. The meat counter guy wasn't amused at my pickiness but that's his problem... It's in the fridge wet aging now.

Don't worry, the best two are safe at my house. Will check again today and get a couple more if any speak to me. :becky:

A little (or lot) long winded here--just skip to the end if you wish

Several years ago I was told about a distributor about 65 miles away in Panama City--Johnson Brothers.
They have a small retail storefront and a moderate size distribution setup that supplies many restaurants and retailers in the FL panhandle and south Alabama area.
I went down and visited with them and told them about Comp BBQ and my needs for quality meat, especially packer briskets and ribs.
Started off buying 2 or 3 packers, then progressed to CAB packers by the case (sometimes 2 cases) then on to Waygu packers. Even ordered a case of huge frog legs through them one time! Took awhile for them to find them froggie legs, but they did.
Last order was the case of Waygu Ribeyes I talked about in my cooking thread.
Sometimes, they had no idea where to find what I was looking for, but took on the challenge of finding it when they could find the time.
Now, we are at the point where they actually hand select CAB packers for me since we do not compete and are back to buying just 3-4 at a time.
We do not pay retail prices, just the $$ charged to restaurants and meat markets. We buy out of "the back", not the retail side.
And, in their world, we a a "tiny" customer but they treat us like Kings.

The one thing I left out of all the above was:
We always take them some frozen vacusucked BBQ when we go to pick up meat.
Even gave them fatties (nekkid of course) one time and then cooked up 10 for the staff there for Christmas presents.

I doubt that such a place exists everywhere the Brethren are located, but I bet there are more than most people think.
You have hunt them down, get them on your side, and a little "bribery" never hurts

The "big boys" like Sysco seem to hard to break in with unless you are a full blown commercial customer.
But..... Never hurts to look around even if you have to drive a bit. We offset the driving costs with trips to our dentist down there, a little shopping in local stores by Mrs Kapn, and dinner at our favorite local's seafood restraurant--The Captain's Table (fitting name, huh?)

Just some thoughts.
