Is anybody else's 22.5" WSM thermo completely useless?

My Maverick is showing 230 and the built in thermometer is showing 195...... I'm pretty sure my Maverick is relatively accurate.

Is there a better one available that is actually accurate or are all the dial type ones useless?

All thermometers have the possibility of error. It's worth checking the calibration on the Maverick, but the dome reading being 40* off isn't really all that surprising.

Think of it as just a unit of measure, 230 Maverick = 195 Dome = Low & Slow BBQ. You will get used to it.

My built in WSM thermometer reads about 50F lower than the actual grate temperature. It's not the thermometer, it's the location of it up in the dome that causes it to read different.

My self installed Tel-Tru on my older 18.5 WSM has always measured less at the dome than on the grate. Normally not 50 degree, but often as much at 20-30 degrees different.

Did you put your Mav probe where the Weber thermometer is?

The difference in temperature between the dome, the top grate and the lower grate is considerable.

To do an apples to apples comparison, the probes need to be at the same place. I did that, and my WSM thermometer was within five degrees. But, from what I have read, that varies quite a bit.

Makes perfect sense now I think of it..... Poor design though. Nobody cares what the dome temp is. Essentially the grate temps are the only ones I care about. Given that my food sits on the grate.

Is the top grate and the bottom grate likely to have much temp difference?
If so I guess I'll HAVE to get another maverick....... lol
