I'd like to give Lump a try but all HD and Lowes has in my area is Cowboy and Lazzari. From what I've read you should stay clear of both of these namebrands. True or Not True? Any recomendations? Thanks.

You can get RO lump at Restaurant Depot - need either a reseller's or non profit type thingee to join, or you can join KCBS and get day passes, which is what I did. The Von's Pavilions in Culver City started carrying B&B Oak Lump, which is great stuff and my go-to, not sure if it's at all locations.

Cal Char (http://calchar.com/) carries lump - can't remember what brands but I've gotten Nature Glo from there, which is definitely cheap, but can be inconsistent sometimes - I've had a couple great bags, and a couple with a bunch of small pieces.

I think you can do ship to store of Wicked Good lump to your local Ace Hardware store. WG is pricey but people seem to love it - haven't tried it myself.

Cowboy lump is completely useless, although Lazzari lump is fine, but the size of the pieces in a bag can vary wildly.

You might check out Southbay Firewood & Charcoal:

RO has alot of "extras" in the bags, like kiln insulation etc. I stopped using it. B&B works great for me. I have been looking for Lazzari since they sell a "tandoor" sized lump ie. bigger chunks but have not been able to source it anywhere outside of CA. I bought some Kroger brand lump this year on sale and it also has been pretty good. I think Kroger is called Ralph's in your neck of the woods... maybe they carry the Kroger/house brand of lump?

There is no such thing as bad lump... Some whine about sparks but I like the way it pops and those little flying embers christen the meat with charred love.

No. But there is an ACE fairly close. HD and Lowes have pretty much killed the standard Hardware Stores in SoCal.

Found RO (USA) @ Ganhal Lumber. #17 bag $15.00 per bag. Don't know if that's good or not.
