Been using briquettes my whole life been wanting to give lump a try.

Last smoke I used the minion method w/ briquettes in my trusty pseudo-weber kettle and it worked great.

This time i'm gonna use Royal Oak lump. Is there anything I should adjust or do differently w/ the lump?

I'd suggest using less charcoal when starting up the lump for the minion method. I find lump starts up more quickly but burns up a little quicker than briquettes so, initially, using less lit charcoal should help. My experience is that lump burns approximately 50-75degs hotter than briqs.

Hello, Conlan -

Welcome to the fun!

Royal Oak lump is some really good lump, in my experience.

The two things I do differently when using lump in the Minion method is that I pack the firebox tighter and I use more wood chunks than I do with briquettes. Briquettes seem to produce a smokier flavor where lump burns at a higher temperature and is less smokey.

Otherwise, the same rules for the Minion method apply.

Please do let us know if you have any other questions -

Thanks!

So...less charcoal, more wood, I'll play with it till I get my temps right.

Cheers

It's definitely hotter so be careful... use less or light less and keep your eye on it.

Sometimes I will use a mix of lump and briquettes so that you get the longevity of the briquettes and the flavor, smell, and extra heat of the lump. Great trick when the wind is blowing that heat away from my leaky units (I really need to seal the doors up, but that's another topic).

I always save the extra large pieces of lump for my longer burns and set them in unburnt when using minion method in order to get a little extra lump burn time.

Have fun experimenting!

Thanks for the tips!

Looks like I better buy a few bags after reading Royal Oaks' plant burned down

Wow!...this stuff (Lump) is hella to regulate temps on my cheapo Pseudo Weber...kinda like a high maintenance girlfriend...better be worth it

Lump will burn way hotter than KF blue. Just gotta regulate the oxygen flow for better control. On a kettle, keep intake open a sliver, pencil width or so. Leave exhaust fully open during cook. It's only adjustable so you can choke out fire when done cooking. ** this is my opinion ** Others will close down their exhaust a bit, but I don't believe it helps a darn thing.

If a hotter cooking temp is desired (chicken) start with more lit coals. If a lower temp is desired, start with fewer lit coals, like 8-12 briqs. Even when using lump, I like to start fire with briqs in a chimney starter.

Thank you sir! and right you are. As soon as I stopped screwing around w/ the exhaust and concentrated on the Intake, she settled down @ around 275, perfect!

You da man!

I love using lump. I have a primo (ceramic grill) and that is all that is recommended. I have not had a problem regulating my temp, what I like is 1) if you need to add addition charcoal it doesn't take long to get to temp and 2) if you shut the air off the grill when you are done you can reuse the charcoal, and 3) little ash.
I hope it works for you!

I wanna try lump too in my UDS, but I gotta lot of Kb briquettes left from memorial day sale. Wife wont appreciate more bags coming in til I start running a little lower. But good luck with them. I hear they burn hotter! So be careful.

You'll have WAY less ash to deal with.
