We all know that the temp at the dome is not the temp at the grate... blah blah blah... But I just hooked my maverick up to the grate on my Genesis and expected it to read 25*-30* lower than the built in... And it's reading 100* HIGHER!

Looks like I need to calibrate that puppy. (after I finish my cook).67608

The stock bi-metal thermos are notoriously inaccurate - most of the time.

The exception is when the thermos are attached to higher end smokers; Spicewine, Klose, Lang, etc.
Tel-Tru thermos begin in the $50 range...

I just find what the dome reads to get the rough grate temp I want to attain.

Just started to try to figure out this ratio on my new WSM. I'll take readings the first few cooks then will just use dome temp after that.

This is my first comparrison. The top (analog) reading is the dome temp, the top (digital) reading is the top grate and the bottom number is the bottom grate.

I didn't think it could be calibrated.

My point was that the dome should be hotter than the grate and the thermo is reading 100* cooler.

My dome temp is always cooler than my grate temp

Dome, 225 = Grate, 250
Dome, 250 = Grate, 280
Dome, 275 = Grate, 310

All roughly, of course!

My dome thermometer usually reads about 25F lower then my ET-732 at the grate, sometimes more.

I'm surprised the weber thermos are off by that much.

There is a site just on bbq probes and they say it is not uncommon for an analog probe that comes on a grill or smoker to be as much as 50f off. I've read a thread where one was like 100f off. Always a good idea to check your probes in boiling water. I did that to all my digital probes, but to be quite honest i font card if the dome thermometer is off. I just figure out what it needs to read to get the grate tmp I want adjust set it for that.

My dome thermo is consistently 15 degrees off of the grate temperature.
