I say go for it. I love my 18.5" WSM.

I don't have one, but a UDS is basically the same thing. I love my UDS, it's very fuel efficient, and easy to use. I hear the same things about the WSM's.

I have the 18" model and the temperature control is phenomenal. Once the temp comes up and stabilizes it will stay at that temp all day.

One of the best back yard smokers available. Some Pro's use them too like Harry Soo.

Our 18.5" holds more consistent temps than our 22.5". I love the space the bigger one affords but for a single Butt, picnic or small brisket the smaller 18.5" gets the call every time.

I too here lots of fuel but whatever it's a great smoker that is still more portable and storable than my UDS. Right now I have 18#s of pork butt on my 18 for its break in cook.
It is still a big smoker that will last a long long time, do it and enjoy it.
I chose the 18 because I have the uds option (if I ever make a coal basket), only mods I did are upside down door, added a middle rack, added three chases for probes and a 16" clay saucer to replace my water pan.

I always laugh when people post they use a lot of fuel, especially when they don't even own one. Will a 22 use more fuel than the smaller 18? Absolutely. Is it over the top, OMG this thing uses as much charcoal as a cheapo offset(like the Chargriller I have)? Nope. The extra space and flexibility for full racks of ribs or packer briskets is worth the use of more fuel.

Do it, the only choice you have is 18 or 22.

If you want to help buy it from a link off this page, and then soak up the info.

I bought the 22" 1st, then found a deal on the 18". The 18 is great for single butts which is what I do most, the room in the 22 allows for more ribs.

As a point of reference, I had a full ring of KB in for a 8 lb. Boston Butt recently. Granted the OD temps were 100*F plus so my first 100 were free. After a low and slow 240-270 for 10 hours, the ring is still 2/3rds full after pulling the butt and closing the vents.

My point is that outdoor temp plays a big part. If fuel costs are of no concern to you, do a 22. My biggest consideration was how many folks to cook for at any one time.

You can't go wrong either way.

I have two 22s. Easy to use. Lots of space. Full ring can cook 10 plus hours. Maintains temp. Love them.

I have and love both the 18.5 and the 22.5, great smokers. Here's some ribs I did today on the 22.5.

I've used an el cheapo offset, and can say without a doubt it used 4 times more fuel than my UDS. Assuming a UDS and 22.5" WSM use about the same amount of fuel, I'd have to say that the 22.5" WSM is very fuel efficient compared to lots of other cookers.

I say go for it. I had a Chargriller w/sfb and always used 20-30 lbs of charcoal for what I would call a normal run of the mill cook and always had to keep tabs on the fuel. The 22.5 can hold a whole 20lb bag of charcoal with no problem but that doesn't mean you'll use the whole load unless you have a lot of food cooking. If you want to use the 22.5 for smaller cooks make or buy a smaller ring to put inside the larger one that comes with the cooker, it''ll cut down on the amount of fuel you use and allow you better control of your burn.

I have owned both a 18 and 22. I sold the 22 mainly for space reasons and knew someone else could use it more then me. It always cooked fine for me. It is a great size for ribs.

I have the 18.5"er and love it! Plenty of room for my wife and I. I've also done pulled pork for my office of 20 people with no problems. They are very efficient with burning and can do an easy 15hr's without touching it.

I love my 18 WSM and it satisfies nearly all my needs. The exception is rib capacity and the 22 WSM has additional capacity. There are a lot of good cookers out there but the WSMs are hard to beat in terms of value.

I have the 22 and would marry it if I weren't already married. LOL. It DOES use up some fuel, though. Im cooking two butts right now since 11pm last night and had to add fuel around 0730. Started out with 16lbs of K...added maybe 5 more pounds.

What kind of cooking do you plan on doing? That plays largely into what smoker you should buy. You may not cook like the rest of us. A lot overlaps, but could you give us more background on what you would use it for.

Buy it, use it, love it! My 22 has gone on 14 hour plus cooks without adding fuel.

As Vision mentioned above http://virtualweberbullet.com/ has all the info you need to run it. I was (still am?) a complete novice to smoking and I read the site back to front before purchasing it (18 months ago) and I haven't had any issues using it and that was well before I discovered this awesome forum.

Look, main thing is what do you want to cook on the WSM you are asking about?

Lots of advice here on how good it is, but you've given us no idea of what you want to do with it.

This would really help to direct you to the right smoker / griller, for your desired result.

Cheers!

Yup. I wonder if those folks:
a) Own a WSM 22
b) Own a WSM 18
c) have experience with actual fuel hogs, and
d) have done the "pound of fuel per hour pound of cooked meat" calculations at like temperatures.

I am looking at buying the WSM 22" smoker. Looking for some input or thoughts. Thanks.

Have a 22.5 and love it. One thing I don't like is having to lift out the top grate to get to the bottom grate. I bought another grate, cut it in half and added two 1/2s stacked on one side of my top grate. Now rarely use the bottom grate.

Since it is vertical, it's footprint is small which is a plus if you need space.

I find it needs a wind-block in wind and cold. I built a portable screen for that. That is a big game changer in fuel consumed on cold windy days.

I really don't have a point of reference on fuel consumption, but as others have said it will burn 12-14 hours on a load. In reality, charcoal is cheap.

Like others have said it will hold temps like a champ.

Good luck, j

Where have most of you all bought your WSM's? Looks like the price for the 22.5" is pinned at $399. How is the shipping from Amazon? They offer free super-saver, but not sure how reliable that is.

I have the 22 WSM and use it for butts, brisket and turkey mostly. I use my proformer for ribs. Both have great temp control and both are very coal efficient.

Savant I went amazon with free shipping(Prime) and it arrived fast and unscathed.

You're right about "pinned" on the price. I watched them for 1 year: Labor day, Memorial day, 4th etc. never moved. Some places would have price drops but the shipping added up over the $399.00/free shipping.

I bought mine from Amazon, went with an open box package that shipped free. The free shipping usually takes a bit longer but never had an issue with it.

Just looked into this Amazon Prime thing....this sounds like it might be the way to go for me as I already buy a ton of stuff from Amazon each year, and probably pay more than $80 in shipping added up. Plus it seems like as an added bonus, you get access to their streaming movies with this too!

Gonna pull the trigger today on the 22.5"....wifey has already given the thumbs up on it. I was on the fence between 18.5" and 22.5", but reading all these threads, looks like even though I won't be doing cooks for a large group of people too often, I like the idea of not having to cut rib racks in half in order to lay them flat.

If you have an ACE hardware close they may have them in stock but the price is still $399 for the 22.5 but the advantage is if anything is really bad they can replace it without sending it back.

Yeah, it's your call on the 18.5 vs. 22.5. We entertain quite a bit, so it was an easy decision. I could have actually used more room with ribs, fatties, pot of beans, ABT's.

Plenty of folks here run the 18.5 and they are the perfect fit for them.

Congrats on the future purchase

I cannot believe my 18" WSM
