I was wondering if someone could help me out. I have a co-worker of mine who has approached me because I'm now the BBQ expert at work. I got one of these 15 gallon, or so, drums and wants to turn it into a horizontal grill, not a UDS smoker. Anyone have any ideas or plans.

Thanks ahead of time. Wish I could convince him of making it a small UDS.

The basic design of a uds is a grill if it doesn't use some way to make the heat indirect. When you say horizontal, that means cut longways in half and hinge the top?You can buy one that size way easier than making. Nice looking little barrel though. Not sure how to help. I would go the upright way and plan a diffuser and just leave the top off for grilling. Best of both. Steve.

If it was me, I would go the above route.

I know you're wanting advice on a grill, but those mini UDSs are awesome to cook on. Find a donor smokey joe, use the grate and lid for the mini UDS.

I would not turn it into a grill. Its going to be pretty flimsy once its cut open and I think it would rust out fast on the bottom. If your the expert convince them to do a Mini UDS!

We won. With your photo and advice I was able to convince him to turn it into a mini UDS. He's still leary about it, but once I walk him through a few things and he makes that pulls that first butt, he will be thanking us. Turns out he has a smokey joe and didn't like it...donor parts. Thanks for the help.
