I am considering buying a UDS from Whitearc smokers, http://www.whitearcsmokers.com/. Has anyone purchased from them? I have never used a UDS. Are they hard to operate/reload? Do they hold temp well? All thoughts and comments are appreciated.

Read these two and the thread I link within. As I have stated, I don't have any personal interaction with the seller and perhaps he has changed his methods. I just wanted to share these threads.

The UDS is dollar for dollar the worlds best smoker. They are very cheap to make, and recquire very little skill to build, but if building it yourself is not an option, then the ones in the link look like they would serve you well.

I'd Craigslist a barrel, burn it out yourself, have a fab shop make it the way you want it. I put a door in mine, VERY pleased I did. Then I had it powder coated. I am loving mine. But if you can't wait, that's not so bad a price that you couldn't start with it and tweak it as you go.

Here's mine, I have welded tabs inside for the grates, no bolts sticking out. Smooth wall stainless, vertical intake ball valve, three nipples with caps, expanded metal basket and a heat deflector cut from the lid. The weber top is mounted with the original lip ring from the barrel to fit back on. It has legs, a swing out door to add wood, lump or to clean. Two ports by the intake for probes and one port at each grill level for Thermos.

After reading your responses, i called over to white arc. he said he burns out the liners with a 1400 degree torch. he said that some of the liner is left behind, but it won't be a problem because if it didn't melt at 1400 degrees, it wouldn't melt while smoking at 200 to 300. is this right, or should i not use a UDS with some of the liner left? thanks again.

Actually, that kind of sounds like cutting corners/laziness. Even if not a problem, personally I'd remove ALL of the liner remnants with a grinder. Having a varying surface of different materials just sounds wrong. From that, I'd begin to question other build aspects where more corners were cut...

Just build a nice all day bonfire in it, clean it out, get it set up to cook with a full load of lump and smear crisco all over the walls, go to town with seasoning. Once the walls are blackened up, you should be good to go. I would take a run at the inside with a palm sander first, it may clear it up. Or the wire wheel/grinder idea.

Hmmm, his website says he uses only new drums, why go thru the trouble of buying new drums and then burning the liner out of them when it's just as easy to buy new unlined? Sounds goofy.
