View Full Version : Safeway bbq battle - my dumb mistake

We participated for the first time this weekend in the Safeway BBQ Battle. First off....It was a BLAST!!!! Met a lot of great people and with the exception of load-in, I thought it was run very smoothly. Okay...now for my dumb, embarrasing, stupid mistake..... I used Kale as a garnish for our rib turn-in box. This, as it turns out was very costly not only in the rib category but also in the National Pork Championship that was running concurrently with the KCBS. The Head judge walked up to me after the awards and told me that had we not gotten 1s for appearance for ribs we would have won the National Pork Competition. (ended up in fifth) We also would have been top 5 in the rib category. I am absoultly sick about it and have nobody to blame for not refamilarizing myself with the rules prior to doing the competition. I won't make that mistake again so live and learn I guess. Overall, though got a few calls and had a great time. Thanks to the organizers for all the hard work! John - (BABY-GOT-BUTT)

Who won everthing John? I saw the results for the KCBS catagories on their website but was wondering about the others. I was entered but was unable to make it this past weekend. Congratulations on your finish....even with the kale.

I do not understand how teams get the 1's for the garnish.

The only (legal) garnish I have ever heard about includes green leafed or Iceberg lettuce and parsley. I've heard the rules permit cilantro but have never heard of anyone using it nor seen it.

I've only heard and/or read about teams getting the 1's for Kale, Red leaf lettuce, etc.

Why do people keep trying it?

I thought that illegal garnish was a DQ as in no score, as in the box gets taken back to the team. have I been wrong (not the 1st time) all along?

A DQ is all 1s. You do not lose your scores in Taste/Tenderness.

The only reason I tried it is because I ran out of parsley and did not know about Kale. like I said earlier......Dumb on my part!

I know that this is small consolation, but you can certainly be really proud of how well you cooked them.

Chalk it up as a lesson and be proud of your performance. It certainly bodes well for your next event.

A score of one (1) is a disqualification and requires approval
by a Contest Rep. Grounds for disqualification: All judges
will give a one (1) in Appearance for unapproved garnish,
pooled sauce or less than 6 samples of meat. All judges
will give a one (1) in all criteria for sculptured meat, a
marked turn-in container, foreign object in the container,
incorrect meat. All judges not receiving a sample will give
a one (1) in all criteria.

I'd take a lot of confidence in that.

What that's pretty silly. If you where a CBJ you wouldn't have made that mistake. I'm still amazed that more cooks don't at least take the class and judge 1-2 events just to understand what goes on in the most important part of a comp the TENT.
