So I was looking through the pics for the 18.5" WSM on Amazon and ran across this

Seems dangerous for one to me (if the glass would happen to crack). I guess this person is just using them for a stand, but this was a new one to me.

Anyone else here done this method?:twitch:

Looks way too dangerous for me to try. If those bottles were to crack you just wasted a chicken.

If this is low and slow, I dont see those bottles cracking. The only way they would crack is if the chickens were very cold and they were instantly heated up (thermoshock). I just dont see a purpose for this, other than using them as a stand, which I couldnt see as being very stable.

Personally, I don't get the point. The whole idea behind the beer can is that the beer and whatever spices are in the beer steam the bird from the inside, accelerating the cook and adding flavor and moisture.

This just looks like a way to stand the birds on end, and there are sure safer ways to do that.

I spatchcock now anyway. Can't recall the last beercan chicken I did.

I thought the beer can was just a way to hold the chicken...

what is the beer bubbles up over the edge and bastes the chicken?

Me? I wouldn't cook with glass bottles.
