if u use oil on the spare ribs and the put ur rub on wont that not stick very well?

I coat everything I'm going to rub with olive oil. It seems to stay moister, and the rub sticks just fine. Many people use prepared mustard.

I use to use mustard but now I just rinse with water and apply the rub.

I think the mustard (and sugar in the rub) contribute to a good bark. Just thinkin' No science

I put vegetable oil on before the rub. I think it helps keep the rub on and doesn't contribute any unwanted flavor. I've been doing that on all kinds of meat with good results.

I've switched over to zesty Italian dressing from olive oil or mustard. It's inexpensive and works great. Seems to keep the meat moist and rub sticks fine.

I use yellow mustard, works great and adds to the flavor profile.
