What is the best way on figure out how many butts to cook for a group of people. I have to fix for 30 so I was figuring around 4 butts. I cook 7lb butts.

I am in the 1/4 lb per person of cooked meat or 1/2 lb uncooked.

That would be alot of butts a half lb. Per person.

So if I do 7 lb butts then that would b 14 people per butt at a half pound each. So 40 people I should be good with 3 butts?

Always use the math.

40 people @ 1/4 lb PP = 10 lbs raw @ 50% yeild = 20 lbs raw meat.

I would always figure pork at 1/3 lb pp. YMMV

What Bubba said. 5oz per person which is 10oz raw 10x30=300 divides by 16=18.75lbs I always add 10% to this and I would cook 20lbs raw butts.

Just today I cooked 65 lbs of butts. It
Yielded exactly 38 lbs of pulled pork.

O.k want to make sure this is right. If i have 40 people and i am cooking 7 lb. Butts. I am figuring 1/2 lb. lb. Per person. That would be 14 people a butt so 3 butts would feed 40. Would that be safe to say?

I normally do not cook anything under an eight pound butt and I've found I can get anywhere between 15-22 PP sammiches per butt. I'd figure if you're doing seven pound butts you'd more than likely be able to get 11-18 sammiches per butt, depending on how consistent you are with portion control/person.
