Man I wish I heard more people talking about how much of a HUGE advantage the Gold version of the Weber Kettle is over the gold. My wife is hating me right now!

Picked up the Silver a couple weeks back and have been using it about 4x a week

Any tips on ash and charcoal management that will make this a less messy situation? Man I wish I got the Gold model.

Might have to pop it on Craigslist and take the loss.

remove the ash catcher and use a 5 gallon bucket

ASH all over my patio man. Using Lump was a HUGE mess. Bought a bag and started pouring some in to do the minion method. Had my vents on bottom open, tons of tiny pieces went all over the patio right through the bottom. The ask catching tray kinda sucks. Especially of there is a slight breeze.

I like the idea of a 5 gallon bucket actually. I'll go try that now.

Call Weber customer service and see if they will sell you the OTG ash catcher. I see lots of folks refer to that over on thTVWB website.

What Robert said. If you have any local Weber dealers that aren't chain stores, they should be able to order the two ash parts you need to make it a gold.

If worst come to worst, I have spare Weber parts and I could get you what you need. But they aren't in the best of shape. They were from a CL purchase to use for parts in my UDS build. It's sad to see how people really don't take care of their cookers.

less than 50 bucks shipped for the ash catcher and ring on ebay.

just bought one last week and it arrived today.

It will clip on to the underside of your grill without any modification.

IF you go the bucket route.....make sure its Metal and not Plastic! Hot Coals and Plastic will not mix well! Just sayin'!

ok, yea, doing that can be a problem. its why i don't pour out of the bag. and if yer in a windy area then its also a problem. the suggestion to get the other parts is a good one.

I just got off the phone with Weber and they said this will NOT fit on a 2009 22.5" Weber Kettle

WTF!

Take a look at the bottom of your kettle. You should be able to see how it will attach. IIRC, there are two versions of kettles and ash catchers. I thought you said you got a new one or was it just new to you?

it will. i put one on an 87 OTS too
for the older ones you have to cut a few small grooves in the leg sockets so the ring will clip on.

for newer kettles, the leg sockets are welded on in a way where the clips will clip in between the welds.

Sure looks like it will fit. ok thanks guys. Not sure why the folks at Weber said not possible.

The folks at weber don't really want you getting a cheap upgrade from silver to gold...

It should work just fine, tell them you need to replace the ash catcher on your gold - no questions! :thumb:

Like others mentioned, look to see if there are small slots for the ring to snap into on the leg sockets.

I really do not like the Gold for smoking stuff, I also feel I get much better draft on my OTS over my brothers and BIL's OTG. I would not take a Gold over my OTS. The ash catcher is the problem and if given a OTG, that would be the first thing I toss.

Never had an issue with ash either, just sweep it off into a metal pale and dump it in the compost. No mess here.

Local feed store or Tractor Supply if one is near you.

Look at goodwill or a discount store for a cheap 8 or 10 (or larger) quart dutch oven (Aluminum or stainless) . Galvanized pails and small metal garbage cans are harder to find.

Yeah, I would specifically avoid using a galvanized pail for an improvised ash catcher. In all likelihood, there would never be an issue, but hot coals in a galvanized bucket Do smell nasty and noxious.

I went out and looked at mine and i don't think there are any horizinallty running slats to fit that replacement catcher into. there are slats that run vertically on the leg holders where the legs slide into but thats it.

Lowes and hd both carry metal pails, you could also look around for a used metal 5 gal drum that kerosine comes in, remove the top and burn it out before using...

i'm pretty sure there aren't really slots cut, the welds of the socket are simply aligned so there's an opening.
my 2010 is that way.

if your welds aren't perfectly aligned, you can cut a tiny notch with a dremel

OR you can bend the tab down and just use a hose clamp

get the gold ash pan
buckets and pails are tacky

most of the recent, like almost ten years or so, can have the parts fitted.
galvanized buckets will be fine as you need much more heat than that to get fumes.

I know I'm late to the party but I also purchased the ash catcher assembly for both my 18 and 22 1/2 Silvers from ebay (webercloseouts). The 22 1/2 went on 1-2-3. The 18, well, it's on there but it sure did put up a fight! Never could get the ring lined up properly so now open means closed but hey, I don't have ash blowing everywhere!

FYI, Weber would not sell the ash catcher assembly to me and I spoke with several reps. All stuck to the script that it wasn't original equipment, etc.

i managed to buy one last year, but i fibbed and told them it was for an old mastertouch

they told me the new one wouldn't fit because of the tabs (old ones used a bracket)

I told them I could make it work and they sold it to me :)
