I was talking to my friend the other day about an upcoming camping trip our families will be taking, and I was lamenting about what BBQ gear I was taking, whether I would take the Kettle or the vertical for outdoor cooking. So he says to me "why bother, there is a gas grill down at the cabin"....He also asked me why I bought "outdated" charcoal grills when gas is much easier...

He has had my smoked chicken, and pulled pork, but he doesn't get it. My thought on using coal vs gas is: that it is not only the flavor profile, but the experience. For years, I hated the thought of using charcoal, and I only used it once or twice a year, when we did MD Pit beef. I always wanted a gas pit to do that too.

Between this site, and a friend who became a KCBS judge and part time caterer of delicious pork done on charcoal, I became a convert. I still have a gasser, but it was relegated to burgers, or when time is a critical factor, like getting off work late.

Anyone else have similar situations happen?

BTW, I am taking all my BBQ toys with me AND either hiding the propane cylinder, or hooking up my fish fryer to it, when we get there.

All tools have their place...

I have a friend does the same thing-- hassles me about the variety of Outdoor cooking vessels and using them more often then the gas grill.

but with him I know its all in jest... we both have lots of hobbies and addictive personalities... (both our wives think were just crazy)

I respect the purists who only use wood or charcoal, but I've done bbq with both gas and charcoal and I love my two vertical gassers. I get a lot of crap for using propane smokers till they taste my food, then they cant talk cuz their busy eating.

My gas grill sits on the side of the house, covered, and NEVER gets used.

Now, at competitions and events that we are catering, we have 5 large gas grills that we use to finish ribs and to prepare a couple other goodies that we serve to the masses... Just makes sense...

All of my friends think I'm a crazy fool when I start talking BBQ. They'll talk about boiling ribs and stuff, when I shoot their theories down, they think I'm being an arse.

So I've simply stopped trying to educate them. It's just too frustrating, like slamming my head against a wall.

But it's funny that they STFU while eating my food. When almost done eating, things like "OMG" "That is so farking good!", start flying around the room.

The next day they still won't heed my advice though.

Don't get me started on talking about naked fatties. One friend who has been cooking brisket for 45 years still thinks a naked fattie is a porn reference. He and his family loved the MOINKs I brought to his bday party last fall. As they tasted them, they kept pointing at me lol.

I loved my gasser for when I wanted to grill up something quick. It died, but for the right price I would 100% get another one for the speed of firing it up. Mostly for veggies or burgers. People that crap on gas all the time confuse me. Haters gonna hate though . I never let what people say they use dictate what I use.

We probably use our gas grill about 6 times a year, for either some quick burgers or a lot of grilled veggies, and that's it.

You mentioned your friend has had your smoked food, but "doesn't get it" makes me wonder if his taste buds just aren't that sensitive. There are such people, and some of them think I'm crazy because I rave about this or that taste, dish, cuisine, or flavor. It's a physiological thing, I think. Some people eat to live, and others live to eat. I'm in the latter category, and wouldn't want it any way!

I wouldn't bother trying to convert anyone when they're all discussing boiling their ribs, etc. I'd just smile, and let the food speak for me.

I have five grills/smokers that all use charcoal.

I've been looking for a Weber gasser on CL...for the wife....

I sold my gasser one week after bringing home my first smoker. Now I have three Traegers, a Kamado Joe and am saving for a Pitmaker. Just can't seem to decide on whether I am getting the offset Long Rifle Sniper or the Vault. Seems getting lower temps on the verticals is pretty tough to do on the Pitmakers.

I like my gasser for finishing ribs and chicken, and for when I need to cook something quick. I think they have their place, but I much prefer charcoal/wood.
