Just bought my first bag of lump at the local grill store, it was $20 for 20 lbs. Is this normal price for lump. Also are some brands better than others or is all lump the same?

Lump is not created equal. I use Royal Oak steakhouse and I love it. I have use red bag also and had mixed experiences, but that was before I knew there was different locations it was shipped from. What brand was it? $20 seems high to me.

All lump is not created equal. The Naked Whiz is a great resource for info on lump:

http://www.nakedwhiz.com/lumprankpoll.htm

I'm usually feeling pretty good spending on average around 50 cents a pound, I'll spend a little more if I'm in a situation where it's easy or convenient to do so. A place nearby overcharges for B&B (I think just under a buck a pound) but it's good stuff, it's right there, so once in a while I just go ahead a grab it. Normally I'll get Royal Oak at either WalMart, DoitBest, or Restaurant Depot.

For briqs, I like the Trader Joe's stuff (which is rebadged Rancher) - great price and really easy to get. :thumb:

The bag says "All Natural Gourmet Lump Charcoal, distributed by Malis"

On the naked whiz chart , its call Mali Gourmet Lump Charcoal. According to the chart it says it should cost $10. Looks like I paid too much. Not a big deal, helping out the local guy.

I use RO when I get a deal on it, otherwise its Blue bag for this farker. I would like to try Wicked Good though, but I have never saw it for sale around my neck of the woods.

Naked Whiz rates the Wicked Good lump very highly, and it's available around where I live, but chit! It's expensive stuff. I'll stick with the Royal Oak made in USA. At $6 and change per bag, the price is right, and I have no complaints. I've heard people say they've found weird stuff in their lump, but I haven't found that at all with the RO. Not yet, anyway.

Here we can get Lazzari Mesquite Lump from Cash and Carry for $13.99 for a 40lb bag. Not bad - works well and good price. I seem to go back and forth between lump and K-Blue.

Just bought my first bag of Humphrey Lump. $12 for 20 lbs.

Cooked for 10+ hours on one load today in the WSM. Windy and cool, so I was pretty happy.

I got the Humphrey's All Natural Lump from the BBQ Equipment Store (Fellow Brethren). I absolutely love that stuff. I understand they're also going to start carrying the Wicked Good Lump which I want to try.

RO is pretty good and is great for the price. My only problem with it that it can have quite a number of smaller pieces in it that can fall through the grate and clog up the vents on my kettle. I have not found any "odd" pieces in the RO like I have found with Cowboy lump.

I have a tendency to still use K Blue for Minion cooks but for the faster cooks and grilling, you just can't beat natural lump IMHO.

All lump is not the same. You'll get lots of advice here on what to get and what to steer clear of. I use B&B Oak. I get it from Academy Sports. It's $12.99 for 20#s.

Your lump cost you too much at a $1.00/lb. Shop around; you should be able to do better than that.

I can get Mapleleaf for $18 for 18 pounds or RO for $15.What I have found is that it is worth the $3 to upgrade to the better lump.In my opion the Mapleleaf burns better and longer than the RO.
