I was driving home this morning from a charity function for Wounded Warriors when I received a frantic call on my cell. The grill guy was sick, could I please come over and fix lunch? Sure, anything for my military friends or in this case, their wives.

I stop home to let the girls out and headed over to this small mansion on the river. Nice place!!:thumb: I was led out to the outdoor pit, nice little setup.

I opened this fancy grill and was pleased to find that it was charcoal fired. Yippie!. I cleaned out the ashes from the previous cook, was looking at some really nice rib eye's and burgers and shrimp. Yippie again, until I find that the charcoal grate was burnt out. HELP! The lovely hostess started diging and found a suitable substitute, phew I am saved.

Then she gave me a small bag of charcoal. I took one look and knew I was in trouble. Yes it was Publix super fast self lighting. :mad2::mad2: AKKKK. What was I to do? People were arriving and there was no time to get something else and it would have been super tacky to do that.

The smell almost knocked me over but I set it on fire and stepped back. Damm good thing too, I thought I had set a can of gasoline ablaze.

After about 20 minutes if calmed down enough to cook and I did the steaks and burgers. Everyone was happy so all was not lost.

I am still shaken from having to endure the matchlite thing. I guess I should be thankful that no one knew. That is except my brethren friends. :tape::tape:

Please forgive me.

Sometimes doing good hurts Jim. Your heart was in the right place, and after the coals were fully lit it probably wasn't too bad. Good on you for helping out.

I have to bite my tongue when I'm in a super market and someone is buying that chit. Some times I just can't do it and tell them how easy it is to start a clean fire.

You are granted absolution for your sin of using matchlight briqs. You did a great thing helping out a great group of deserving people. You followed the principle of adapt and overcome. For this you are forgiven, now go and sin no more. :becky:

I will confess I have in the past on 2 occasions used the match lite to get a fire started and let it burn until completely ashed over before adding logs and splits because the wood was damp and I could use the heat to dry it out, it was an offset and I actually didn't taste any off flavors, I wonder if you let it burn a while if it really does burn away the lighter fluid taste on the outside and you are ok as long as you don't add more during the cook and only use wood. I usually use kbb but was not cooking at home but on someones elses equipment and that was all they had to get things going so it works in a pinch.

It takes a big man to admit that he actually used the (I can't even the word because my PIT might hear it :-D) charcoal. But you are forgiven since it was for a good cause and it wasn't your Pit.

I have a small bag of matchlight on the back porch. :shock:Sent wife to store so I could grill a couple of steaks. Lucky for me I scraped up enough KB from several old bags to get the job done without using the nasty stuff. I had a long talk with her about it... You are forgiven brother Jim. Just don't tell anyone that I have a bag hidden on the porch!

Its actually not that bad. I saw Mike Davis starting up his big Yoder Offset with it last year in Slidell. I'm sure he let it burn way down though.

While I'm not a Match-Light fan I do understand it purpose. It is a very smart thing for marketing and after watching Myron squirt lighter fluid all over his charcoal to light up, I wonder who is the sinner here.

I love the smell of napalm in the morning but cannot abide the flavor of matchlight. My son you are forgiven as the good you did for the charity outweighed your indescretions.

I don't use it, but a friend who does a lot of DO cooking uses matchlight to cook with because it does not affect anything cooked in a DO with the lid on.

I guess you'll be carrying a bag of lump in the trunk with you from now on just in case of such emergencies.
