Hi All from England UK, My first post begins here
I'm planning on starting my UDS tomorrow and to bring your bbq smoking style over here and show em how its done properly! but have a Q about paint! I intend to annoy my neighbours first thing in the morning by burning my 55 gallon (200 ltr in my money) barrel ready to paint, I have a couple of new cans of High-Heat resistant BBQ Black spray paint ready but not sure whether I should prep with a grey metal suitable Primer to apply to the bare steel before the black coats ?????? From what I've read most people just put the black straight onto the barrel after burning but I want this to last and survive our English weather :mmph:
Any advice would be apreciated
I'll post some pics soon of my UDS once it's ready. :-P
Cheers all

Unless the primer is also high temp I would pass and just go with the high heat paint.

I agree.....high heat paint only if your primer isn't high heat. You'd probably get more protection for your smoker if you buy...or make....some sort of cover for her.

Thanks for the advice brothers! I'd decided to make a cover also so I'll just go straight on with the black, Claret (Cobblers) trim maybe but not Blue Yobtaf lol :icon_smile_tongue:

One other thing that will help is to put her on wheels or something else to keep her bottom off the ground......

I'm already over budget so the wheels will have to wait and she can settle for 4 bricks at the moment  but I plan on keeping her a couple of inches off ground. Thanks again for all the tips. Burn tonight and sanding/spraying tommorrow.

We'll need that luck cheers Yobtaf, I think you'll be ok with Cardiff lol

Just wipe it down with mineral spirits after the burn to remove rust.

Great UDS! I am also from the UK and anew member planning my first build, I especially like the flue on your UDS, what materials and how did you attach the flue.

Thanks in advance

I regard the annual painting of the drum as a "Rite of Passage"

Painted first coat on my UDS tonight. I wanted heat resistant paint but most of all, I wanted it to last. Checked at HD today and the flat black, high heat Rustolium was there but I didn't want flat black. Almost bought engine paint when I seen the Rustoleum Specialty High Heat Ultra in semi-gloss. It says it's their longest lasting finish and resists heat up to 1,200F. So I went with that and put the first coat on tonight. Anyone else tried this?

Hi Steve,

I used a thin .6mm sheet of steel for the flue , got it in B&Q round by the nuts, bolts and fittings aisle, I just rolled it and clamped it with hose clips, I've used tin foil wrapped round the bottom as a gasket for a nice snug fit and it just pushes in tight so I can easily take it out when I don't want to use it or if I use a longer version I've got, and so I can pull it out at the end and put the bung cap back in when I've finished cooking to smother the fire and save charcoal. I've found this draws perfectly and holds excellent temps. I've got about 3" of the flue below the lid to create a smoke/heat trap and it works well with no stale smoke issues or any other problems.

You can see more clearly what I mean on this pic, I wouldn't advise a permanently fixed/welded flue/exhaust, especially if your storing it outside and want to make a cover to make it weather proof

you could use a piece of PVC and just screw it into the bung and buy a cap to fit. When you want to store it, just unscrew from top, turn the lid over, screw pipe back into the inside of the lid, put the lid back on...

Very nice  How do you get a short piece threaded at both ends? or did you do that yourself? It's not Ugly enough though, far to neat and professional lol I like the danger aspect of sharp metal edges on my exhaust lol
