Any suggestions on which grinder to get as a novice grinder with an eye on maybe making my own sausage at some point? I'm getting to the point where I am having some serious trimmings from both briskets and spares such that I don't want to waste the meat. Any suggestions are appreciated.

If you already have a Kitchenaid stand mixer, the grinder and sausage attachment is pretty cheap, and works well for home quantity grinding and sausage making.

Just using a standard food processor to "grind" the meat into ground?

This is what i've used for the past 5 years and i'm pretty happy with it. I've ground quite a bit through it and it keeps on going.

X3!! I just bout one a few weeks ago and have ground about 30lbs of meat thru it already, works awesome!
If I had any complaint about it, it's that it feels like there should be one more grinding plate to complete it... it comes with a 3/16", 5/16" and 3/8" plates, I'd really like to have a 1/4" plate, it just seems like the perfect size for sausage...

Save your $$$ and don't get the KA attachment. Get the one from Northern Tool.
I don't have the Kitchener, but I believe the older one, branded as just Northern Tool, is the same.
I've had mine for about 3 years and love it.
It has seen over 30 Whitetail Deer, 500 pounds of sausage and 500 pounds of ground chuck. That's not counting the veggies that gone through it.
I've never used the stuffer attachment that comes with it, so I can't help you there.
If your bankroll will allow it, grab a stuffer and a mixer too. You won't regret it. I have the old 8# horizontal that they used to sell. They still sell the mixer. For smaller batches, I just use the KA stand mixer with a dough hook. It will hold 5# at a time. The sausage mixer likes 12-15 pounds at a time.

log onto the sausagemaker.com up in Buffalo new York..you will not have to search any other sites..one stop shopping for grinders, casings, spices you want sausage equipment you go to a sausage genuis...this guys stuff rocks...

I'm not trying to answer for him, but I have the kitchen aid and while it's okay, its not great. Sometimes I feel like I'm using the saw blade on a swiss army knife to cut 2x4s. It gets the job done, but its not always pretty or easy. The grinder does the job, but I find myself stopping and cleaning it out often. The stuffing is cumbersome. I use it for 5#s or less at a time. I haven't done a lot of sausage making, which is why I got the KA. It gave me an idea of whether I like it. Eventually, I will get a dedicated grinder and stuffer.

I just bought a LEM #5 at Academy for $209. I think that was a pretty good deal on it and i heard it is a pretty good grinder, dont know yet.

I deboned, ground, seasoned and mixed ~70 pounds of butts yesterday.
It took 3 hours, including beer breaks, all by my lonesome.
It's setting in 2 gallon baggies and I'm gonna stuff bulk and 35 mm casings with it tomorrow.
Back on topic. The grinder is a #5 which is not very big. You will be cubing and almost freezing the meat to get it ground.
If you need to regrind it or use it as a stuffer, forget it. Unless you like the consistency of hotdogs for sausage.
The one above that KnuckleHead speaks of, is a great deal.
Grab a 1/2" and a kidney plate (for stuffing). They are nice to have.

I have a question. I'm trying to pick a reasonably priced meat grinder since my wife suggested getting me one as a birthday present. Gotta love it. Anyway, the question is, what does the # signify? I see the one a northern tool is on sale for $99 and it's a #12.

Great grinder. That's the one I have and love it.
The # is the size of the blade and the plate. The bigger it is, the more it will grind per hour.
One person can't keep up with a #12.
Unless you like manual labor, stick with an electric.
I got revenge on my son when I gave him my #32 hand crank one.
And he STILL loves me.:loco:
