View Full Version : I changed my opinion about my thermopen

I have been meaning to write this for a while now.
I have told several people that a maverick is a neccesity and a thermopen is a fashion statement.

I bought the one with the US flag when a military basher was dissing it.

I bought it as a fashion statement. I also got the belt holster with it.
You have to steralize the probe before you can flip it closed, so I bought a package of alcahol wipes at the wal mart pharmacy and put half of the wipes out in the BBQ shed.

When I first started using it, it was still just a fashion statement.

When using a UDS, you have to open the lid, check things out and slam it shut quickly to avoid getting too much fresh air to the coals. To be able to open the lid, do 3 temp checks in about 5 seconds and slam it shut is awesome.

It's like getting your first cell phone or first internet connection. before you have it, it's a luxury that you can live without, but once you have it, you need it and it would be hard to part with it.

I won't be telling anyone "it's just a fashion statement" anymore. I get it now.

Ya I always felt that it was a little on the expensive side and was not needed until i got a big gift card to amazon from work and said why not. Not its not only my fav kitchen/smoking tool its also my wifes as she uses it all the time in the kitchen. I still think you can live without it, but it sure is one really nice tool to have.

I got to use mine for real this weekend at our first comp. There's no comparison on the speed of that bad boy compared to my old stick thermometer. Even my teammate who hadn't used the thermapen yet was amazed at how fast it read temps.

We all know that with the Yellow one you can check temps faster then the black one and can check temps though house walls.

If you have a stealthy grey one, you can check the temps without anyone seeing you do it.

It was hard to pull the trigger on a Thermapen but I'd buy a second one without hesitation if this one went south.

I love my super duper fast orange one, anyone that hasn't seen one always wants to use it cause of how fast they are. Money well spent in my book:thumb::thumb:

Why wait? You will need the second on when the first one goes bad.

So are they water proof or not. You would think that something made for bbq would be water proof after all bbq cooking usually come under some harsh conditions like rain and snow

The current ones are listed as splash proof. They have been marked down from their original price. They do this as a new model is rolled out. I got mine on saleas the original splash proof one was introduced

Mine has gotten wet in the process of cooking, but it has never sat outside in the rain, or taken a plunge in the pool. So, I'm guessing they are water "resistant," but not "waterproof."

Of course everyone knows that Chuck Norris has the red one and its the toughest and quickest one in the lot. It can check the temps, and kick you up side the head before you can get the door on the smoker back down.

So, the red one will perform a heavily staged temperature check, and it will be totally unbelievable?

Yea, I have about four of those things. I keep 2 in the RV for comps. 1 in the house and one in the knife bag for catering. Always thinking I need another, lol!

They bumped the price up $5 for a month or two so they could have a "sale", selling them at regular price. Now they have a price reduction to sell them at regular price. I'm not sure that means they are coming out with a new model
