I am in need of a rub recipe that is a winner, for a somked pork butt. I usually use a Memphis syle rib rub but am looking for something that will keep 'em coming back for! If you have any suggested recipes please share!
I am also using an injection that contains a lot of MSG, if you have any alternative made from scratch injections to share it would be helpful..

not a big fan of MSG... a good rub for pork will have salt, pepper, brown sugar, a little cayenne, paprika, the combos are endless... if you want a commercial rub try SM sweet and spicy or Oakridge BBQ secret weapon, you cant go wrong with either one, they are both awesome:thumb:

1 tbsp. chili powder
1 tbsp. onion powder
1 tbsp. garlic powder
1 tbsp. cayenne
1 tbsp. kosher salt
1 tbsp. ground black pepper

Once I started injecting my pork butts with peach juice, sugar, and hot sauce, I never used anything else for injection. I agree with the others, SM sweet and spicy is the rub to go to.

Here's my basic rub for pork butt:
3 tablespoons paprika
3 tablespoons kosher salt
2 tablespoon brown sugar
1 tablespoon garlic powder
1 tablespoon dry mustard
It's simple, and creates a great bark - especially if you put it on the night before the cook.
