I can't answer your firebox question but I have a suggestion...attach the sides of that frame to your drum. You'll gain a little "working space" on each side, plus wheels. I just finished up narrowing an old grill frame for my vertical smoker. I haven't used it since finishing it up two days ago, but I can tell you that it's a lot easier to move, and I know the platforms on each side will make things easier for me! Plus, since I had the frame and some angle iron laying around it was a freebee.:-D

Hopefully someone here can help you out with the firebox issue.

What kind of a drum are you trying to build?

I got my UDS shelf the same way, off of an old Char-Broil gasser. It fit perfect. Gave my son the other one for his.

That side fire box just might work with some proper engineering. I think the folks on this forum are brilliantly creative when it comes to fabricating things (and creating new dishes). But, I really don't know why you would want it. Part of the beauty of the drum smoker is the radiant heat coming straight up that helps cook the food along with the smoking effect. If I want indirect, I have a lower shelf I can put in just above my charcoal basket and then put a 12x12 piece of slate tile on it to block the direct radiant heat, although I don't use it very much.
I agree that using the shelves and wheels from the gas grill would be a great idea, but as for using the cooker part of the gasser, I wouldn't. They usually have openings on the bottom to ventilate the gas fumes that can't be shut off. Many such gassers are also made of cast aluminum or thin metal and I'm not too sure it would stand up to the heat of a wood fire being built inside of it. JMHO
