Yea guys another farkin Phrasty build!

I'm at a standstill on the 100 Gal build (http://www.bbq-brethren.com/forum/showthread.php?t=121043) cuz I'm waiting to get a sheet of 1/4 steel. Have to wait a bit before I can squeeze it into the budget... Probably looking at the end of the month...

Anyways been meaning to upgrade my everyday smoker/grill. I have the big girl but my smaller grill is basically a 100lb propane cylinder and I can grill and smoke on her but I've always smoked by placing the fire and the food on opposite sides of the tank and it's taking it's toll on the poor thing. I've had this grill now for about 4-5 years and I dunno if you guys notice but I use her a LOT... She's served me amazingly but it's time for an upgrade!

And after that long intro, lets dig into the good stuff:

I washed and purged the tank with soapy water 3 times yesterday and left it full overnight. I started on it a bit late today but I masked off the door, laid out the hinges and cut the doors. I also managed to get started on the door seals as well. It's going pretty nice so far. I think I'm going to make this one into a reverse flow. Not sure if I'm gonna make it tunable or not yet... we'll see.

Here's the progress made today:

Masked out the doors with tape:

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a84/phrasty/100lb%20Propane%20build/ff3f574c.jpg

My little man came by and double checked everything... Once I got the all OK i started cutting! :thumb::becky::heh:
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a84/phrasty/100lb%20Propane%20build/7c9d3df8.jpg

Then I cut the top line and tacked on the hinges:

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a84/phrasty/100lb%20Propane%20build/5961ccdd.jpg

Cut out the rest of the door:
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a84/phrasty/100lb%20Propane%20build/f0e548f2.jpg

Pretty good looking interior:

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a84/phrasty/100lb%20Propane%20build/04291071.jpg

Then I ground of the paint from the edge of the door:
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a84/phrasty/100lb%20Propane%20build/b706cfda.jpg

Cut and bent the side seals:
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a84/phrasty/100lb%20Propane%20build/ff294038.jpg

And tacked them on:
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a84/phrasty/100lb%20Propane%20build/9dcf9503.jpg

Then the front:

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a84/phrasty/100lb%20Propane%20build/64ec40bf.jpg

And this is where we are right now... Depending on how the evenings are after work I should get a bit more progress done this week. **I've left on the base of the cylinder for now so I can stand it up on end if needs be. That's gonna come off pretty soon!**

So nice to work on a smaller tank again... Things come together so quickly! :heh:

Still thinking about the legs/support setup. Not sure if I wanna make a cart for this one or make it just have 4 separate legs and supports so that they can be removed and the grill can be a but more transportable like the others. What do you guys think? Any suggestions?

Thanks for looking guys...
Cheers

Love love love yer build threads!

As for supports, dunno :noidea:. How would you be transporting it and how often?

That foreman looks tough - I'd watch it around him!

Another great thread. But tell me where do you find those tanks. I have been looking and always come up with nothing. I have tried local propane dealers, e-bay, craigs list you name it with no results.

Thanks gtr! Well usually I make my grills of this size with detachable legs so I can use a bolt and release them and pack them in the grill itself and throw it in the pickup and move with it. But I'm thinking this grill will be more based at home. But I don't want to rule out the options of taking it to comps or jobs if needed.

And yeah... my foreman is all fun and games until it comes to work! He's a serious little fella! I just wanted a pic and you can see the look he shot me! :heh:

Thanks Brother! aw man, I really should try and do a line up with my grills one day... I think I have about 6 already built and these 2 on the way now. I keep a couple of the grills packed up at all times so I can just grab them and go when I have jobs to cook on site. :thumb:

Send me the old one!:becky:

Haha Nice try! Trying to save the poor thing so I can keep it for location jobs before it gets too farked up! :thumb:

Thanks Stephan! Check propane distributors, not necessarily the manufactor. I can only assume that it's regional though. Dunno how NY will be. Probably easier to get tanks in the more rural areas. :thumb:

Good lucy man, Hope you get through!

Got a little time after work today so I just messed with the doors a bit. Attached the top & final seal, finished up the welding on them and a bit of grinding.

Haven't made up my mind if I'm gonna have a 30 gal cylinder for the firebox or a fabbed box style. Kinda leaning towards the box style. That just means that I'll have to wait on the sheet of steel for that too...

Here's a couple pics with the updates.

Welding isn't the prettiest but I like the way it looks... :heh::thumb:

Looking good friend! You are working mighty fast too. Speers90 and yourself working circles around me. LOL

I'm trying to let the students do a lot of mine so I can use it as a learning experience. They need the practice LOL... Plus, it is free labor for me. :)

What kind of rod are you burning? I was using 6011 and 7018 on most of mine up to this point but since you and speers90 are moving in circles around me, I crunk up the mig so I didn't have to spend so much time chipping slag and grinding on 6011's and then going back with 7018 and then chipping more slag and brushing with flap discs... (well actually, I had ran out of mig gas and had to wait on another cylinder and now that it's here...).

I will still use the 7018 to build trailer and put legs on and stuff. 7018 is just structurally stronger and gives excellent looking beads.

A bit off subject but.... I added a ball valve drain to my air compressor yesterday to replace the POS pitcock that it comes with. You can't imagine the the dirty thoughts that went though my mind as I was handling that tank. Threads like this make Farkers like me think dirty thoughts... Cheers!!!

To answer your question, I vote for detachable. You may leave it at home most of the time, but if you ever want to haul it up that mountain, which you will, it seems it would be easier to transport.

Hey guys, Did a little work on the smoker over the weekend. didn't have that much time but I got the grate slides & the food grates done up. I think its coming together nicely!

Been thinking about the stand and it's gonna be detachable for sure. Just trying to think of how compact to make it!. Eh... it'll come to me when it's time.. :heh::loco::wink:

Well here's where I'm at.

Future grates all cut up:

...and welded up. Still need to chip the slag...

Gonna add an optional 2nd shelf & I need to work on cutting off the base of the tank and cleaning that up + doing the handle before I get to the FB. NEED to get the sheet of 1/4" steel! :mmph:

Anyways, that's it for now! Thanks for looking guys! :thumb:
