So.. here's the notes from my first competition, which I just got back from. Let this be a note for all new comers!

I arrived at 8:15 for a 1:30 turn in time and for me it was perfect.

We brought the smoker, a bag of odds and ends, a cooler, a small square table, charcoal, fire extinguisher, and chairs. And we were, by far, the least prepared, without a canopy.

Got the brinkmann going. I could tell there were smirks from other competitors, but the leader and our neighbors were really nice.

Even thought it was non KCBS it was definately pretty serious. The rigs and equipment was up there with Seaside, with the exception of first yearers like me.

Once the ribs got going, whenever I opened the lid I kept getting complements how they looked perfect.

Long story short, I made my best product. Really good. There were eighteen teams in the Ribs, and I took home the Mayor's Choice award, which apparently wasn't the mayor's choice, just a fourth place or honorable mention. No cash prize but a ribbon. I'm pretty happy.

Wish I entered other categories since it got pretty tedious in the middle.
All and all I'm BBQed out but happy and willing to do it again.

I'm already thinking 'bout next time but I have no idea where. How many comps allow HS students? no clue

As far as I know, the only age restriction in the KCBS rules is for judges who must be at least 16 years of age.

I sincerely doubt that anyone would prevent you from competing. After all, all BBQ competitions that I've ever participated in as a judge or a team member or a cook have each been some kind of fund raiser.

I suppose that an organizer could place some restrictions on contestants if they had a reason to . . . but I doubt that any would.

Have you taken a look at the KCBS calendar of events? You can sort by a lot of different elements.
