View Full Version : What do you do while smoking?

"Plan A" for most folks and for me too, lots of times, is to kick back and have some cold ones with some good friends. But especially early on in a long cook, friends can be busy or scarce. I've enjoyed tailgate projects -- I built a tin-roofed BBQ shed while cooking spare ribs, some cool log cabin adirondack chairs (http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-WbWYW8HKGFE/TneZufAHxKI/AAAAAAAAA4Y/bB-IX4Tw22U/s1600/IMG_4470.JPG) (with hand tools) while smoking chicken, a sign (http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-d4PRz5487b0/TkkznarH4-I/AAAAAAAAAzU/V0N0ghELJZI/s1600/sign.JPG), and a couple of benches that fold into a full-sized bed (http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-M32T07Wh9yQ/TneZtId2X3I/AAAAAAAAA4U/CGT3Y2i8EHc/s1600/IMG_4471.JPG) while attempting my first fatty (and two big racks of ribs).

What do you guys do with the time? Collecting ideers.

Pretty much anything that's on the To-Do list at the time. Gota reserve a little time towards the end of the smoke for a homebrew or two though. Cheers!!!

Listen to tunes, have a homebrew or two, prepare sides, wash the car, sleep, or just whatever. When I first got into this hobby, I would have answered this question differently... it would have been watching the thermometer and panicking every time the temp moved a few degrees one way or the other from my target temp :)

Sleep.

That's the beauty of a WSM!

If I'm cooking during the day I'll mow the lawn, clean the garage, play with the kids, whatever needs to get done that day, depending on the season.

Do some mountain biking or go jogging on the dirt trail loop just outside my door step. But lately I've been working on my new backyard landscaping project which includes a large elevated concrete patio. I don't even pay any attention to my UDS during that time. On several occasions the meat came out overdone and dried out. But that's ok, as long as I'm getting things done and there's food on the table at the end of the day...:))

I got into this hobby with the intention of adding smoking to my home brewing days. Now that the weather is cooling off, the home brewing will be starting back up with a smoker or two running in the background. My new patio is under construction so it won't be long!

If I am doing a long cook such as butts or brisket I usually get out there at 5 or 6am and enjoy the peace and quiet with a cup of coffee and a good cigar. When I do faster cooks later in the day there are "many" ice cold beers being consumed while chasing my kids around the yard.

I have a TV in my garage so I usually put on a BBQ DVD (Pitmasters, Best in Smoke, Versus, etc.) or just keep a movie running and complete some chores or look for something to do to my smokers that aren't being used at the time. I really like building UDSs or mini-bullets, etc.

I even modded my Jambo! Yep, I did. :-P

The UDS travels with me whereever I go so in the past while smoking I have:

gone surfing
gone sailboarding
Bar hopping on the boat
watched TV
Sat on the beach
raced the Ultra 4 racer
pit crewed
gone recreational 4wheeling, (not racing the Ultra4 car)
ridden the ATV
gone sailing
sat on my ass
drank a ton of beer
set up camp
made sides
worried about the smoker
thwarted attempts by the Ocean City, MD police dept. to stop my smoking (This ended in me sitting in a lawn chair in the middle of a paid parking lot staring at the smoker because I couldn't be withing 200 yards of a building or something)
built other smokers
trained dog
worked on rock rig
drank more beer
Put ribs on smoker in back of truck once and hit the road camping. they were almost done when we got there.

Hey all -- I took a hiatus for health reasons but am smoking again, thus returning to our little community here. I'm only "bumping" this back to the present because the "new me" (25 pounds lighter and I only get to eat pork when I cook it, now) has a new answer to this question -- once I get everything stabilized, I ride my bike in one place where I can watch the meat -- got in over 90 minutes of interval training. Counters any guilt I feel about drinking beer and putting my feet up while I finish the cook...

That was me also when cooking on my elcheapo offset. With each cook on my drum, I'm more relaxed & more trusting that it doesn't need me to "feed the beast" or adjust a vent 2-3 times each hour. I still can't make myself wander far from the cooking area, but with my new ET732 I can at least go inside & watch a little TV. Most of the time, however, I enjoy just hanging around the deck with a cold beverage while listening to tunes (or a ball game) or reading an ebook on my Kindle Fire.

That's about how it goes. I try and sprinkle in beers when I can, and on a really hot day a TnT or 7.
