I never have. What brand of lump are you using?

Ammonia is a colorless gas with a characteristic pungent smell. If you don't smell or taste it in your Que I wouldn't worry about it.

Once I use up the last bag of Cowboy I have, I'm done with that brand. Too much junk wood in there for me and the burn rate is inconsistent.

I would detect that ammonia smell from Kingsford (in my pre-enlightened days) but never with lump or natural briquettes.

It's probably the Cowboy lump. I believe it's made from scrap hardwood flooring and such. Cowboy is not rated very high around here. Have a look the Naked Whiz's lump charcoal database http://www.nakedwhiz.com/lump.htm

I use and recommend Ozark Oak. It's very high quality stuff.

You can buy it for $8.95 per 10lb bag @ http://www.grillstuff.com. Buy 11 bags and you get free shipping - that makes it a smokin deal. I use it for comps and home cooks. I'm about to put another order in for 20 bags. I can add a few for you if you can make it out to Fall City to pickup.

I order it from grillstuff.com. I usually order 20-25 bags at a time. They ship in large heavyweight boxes with 5 bags per box and typically ship ground. Hope this helps.

Yes I have. When I searched for this on the Big Green Egg forum I found quite a few reports.

It seems to happen with a lot of different brands of lump, so it seems to be more of a random "bad bag" issue. Even the brands that are considered premium had the issue.

Hit up a Rich's Spa's and try out the Wicked Good weekend warrior blend lump - burns forever in my buddy's Lg Egg... 14+ hours on 1 fire box load of lump!

Naked whiz rates it as one of the best too! :thumb:

I have used Lazari's mesquite lump charcoal and sometimes smell a slight ammonia odor. I have never tasted anything different when using it. The Lazaris sparks alot when starting and it also leaves a white residue on the inside of my offset. Those are the only differences that I have noticed. I still eat the meat and love it.
