View Full Version : Making A WSM Or Other Smoker Mobile?

I know I've seen some pictures somewhere regarding carts, wheels, tables, etc. to make a WSM or other smokers mobile on the patio. Any good ideas for making them mobile? Pictures?

Good thread...I'll be watching as I've been toying with several ideas to make my smoker mobile, without dragging it, but at the same time I need to lock it in place. It'll be interesting to see what others have done.

Like this? Would work the same for a WSM with some minor changes to hold the WSM in place.

I used a performer for a Cajun Bandit mod. Table, wheels, charcoal bin, storage shelf all in one.

I built a VERY crude cart for my wsm a couple years ago when i hurt my shoulder and carrying it 30' from the shed to where i'd usually fire it up was absolutely brutal. It was based on a hand-truck which i made out of wood although metal would've been better but i didn't have a welder. It looked just like a hand-truck but made out of 2x4's for the vertical members and a couple 2x4's to hold these together then i attached a piece of plywood just big enough to hold the wsm, bag of charcoal and the chimney starter, screwed the plywood to the bottom of the vertical 2x4's then i also ran some steel wire(had it kicking around) from the front edge of the plywood up to the 2x4's at about a 45° angle. Added some crappy wheels i had kicking around and that was it. It wasn't pretty but saved me from carrying it. The thing lasted about 3 years before finally broke but it did a decent job plus it cost me nothing since i had all the crap laying around. I don't have any pics but it was very easy to make.

I saw a post on this forum not too long ago and someone had a WSM with casters attached. I know I save the post but I will have to search for it. I am interested in doing the same thing to mine. If I remember correctly it looked like a swiveling locking caster with a bolt welded to it. They then drilled a hole in the bottom of the WSM legs and attached the casters with washers and bolts. The mod looked simple enough to me. You may be able to find a caster made that way and save all of the trouble, I just haven't shopped around yet. Too many other irons in the fire.

The weight of the BGE's limits its mobility.

Some Great stuff for sure :clap2:

I was thinkin a quick & easy one would be one of those furniture dolly's with a galvanized oil changing pan attached to it & then secure the WSM to the galvanized pan? Maybe with U bolts if you did not want to drill into your WSM base?

Thoughts on this?

Now that is some serious hardware! Wow!

I guess I would have to ask how far you are needing to move it and over what kind of terrain? Is this just something to get it in and out of the garage?

Yeah sort of...... Just around the patio from an area of storage to an area of use. No rough terrain, just concrete.

If its just flat concrete I would suggest a flat cart with casters. Your idea is fine except once you start tipping things I fear you will have issues with all the sections wanting to come apart and racks and the pan bouncing around. With a flat design you are upright and stable. In theory you could even move it if necessary during a cook.

Round drum dollies is what we make and sell. Some with handles and some without. They fit all three sizes of smokers we make. Large, rough terrrain wheels are available and 3" wheel are standard. Steve.

Nice set ups!

I tried dolly wheels on my WSM and found it moved about 10' from the wind and a not so even patio:rolleyes:

I took the frame from an old gasser, put a piece of plywood on the bottom rails and called it good for the WSM that I keep in Missouri. It kinda looks like crap but it works.

I am modeling this up in CAD as I write this so I can get some dimensions to cut by. I like the extra shelf space you have added. There was another previous post that used the frame from an old Performer. It would be nice if I could find one of those but around here I can't even find an old kettle let alone a performer. :becky:

How tall is that top edge? Is it hard to get food into it?

Im in the process of getting another one made. Modifications are caster in the front, the SS isnt going to have the cutout for the WSM. too much cost to have that much waste and one of the shelves removed (for cost only). Everything was 1"square tubing and powdercoated
