View Full Version : Beginner and his UDS' first smokes (with Pron)

Hey all, well after being chased by my family to finish my UDS, I have fired it up a number of times in the last 3 weeks. This thing is SO AWESOME! It is easy to smoke with and if anyone is holding out on building one, don't....

The first pic is of my virgin UDS

The very first thing I smoked were Dino Ribs: 4 hours on, 2 in foil at 220-230, came out great

2nd thing: 3 fatties, one I rolled in 3 slices of pepperjack cheese. The weird thing is that most of the cheese kinda fused into the fattie but you could still taste it. Bacon just started to crisp. Tasted great!

Then I did baby backs and spares. Both came out great but I must admit the spare ribs had quite of bit of fat/marbling and so they were pretty darn greasy. babies were even great the next day reheated.

Thanks to everyone here supplying info on building a UDS. Now my family wants to know what I am going to smoke this weekend.... :clap2:

Next I think is pork shoulder...maybe I need to start hunting feral hogs.:-D

Whoa wait a minute, you need to get back in here and tell us more about the design and build of that not so ugly UDS. Also more pron of it would be nice. Did you know there is a whole thread dedicated to uds'es? There's also one for posting pics of them to show them off.

I did see the thread. I did some shots during construction so I will post them.

Great job on the UDS

Thank you for all the kind words. I am not completely done with the UDS as I am going to put an eye stalk and two vertical tubes on the weber dome. But I need to do some research on the ceramic coating that I understand is on the Weber dome.

As per the pictures, I took a standard drum like everyone else did, welded some sheetmetal brackets on the bottom for the wheels and tacked on the wheels. The gold domes are actually pipe fence caps and the laser and suction looking thing is just trinkets I bought up at a local Iron fence/pipe place. The 90 degree bends that the laser attaches to was also something that was prebent at the store.

I TIG welded everything together and painted it...done!!

I would like to warn everyone if you weld on something close to the upper rim of the drum like I did, you run a good risk of tweaking the drum out of round and you will have to bang it back into shape.:tsk:

Next year at my annual prop party where this photo was taken, we'll have to get your Dalek smoker, and my R2 smoker and really take some interesting photos.
