Well, Mother nature is on the rag again and i have to try and smoke around it. This will be the first time i have ever smoked in the rain. What kind of problems can i expect to run into with all of this moisture? Will my cook times be extended? Will my smoker need to be tended to more often?

Also, do any of you know if any companies make a wireless meat thermometer so i can leave the probe in the meat and watch the temps from inside the house? I'm doing an overnight smoke and and i'd love to be able to monitor my smoker's temp from bed instead of out in the rain.

Thanks!

Not sure the humidity will be a huge factor, as long as you have some sort of cover over it. As far as a remote thermo, I recommend the Maverick ET-732 (http://www.shop.5-0bbq.com/NEW-Maverick-Remote-Smoker-Thermometer-ET-732-ET-732.htm).

You'll need to watch temps a little closer. You may need a bit more fuel than normal. Lots of wireless themo's out there. Just depends on how much $ you want to spend. Cheap ones can be cheap quality.

I just recently bought a Maverick Model #ET-732 Wireless BBQ Thermometer and I love it!! I looked at numerous therms over the past couple months and I finally decided on this one. No issues with it at all. It monitors both the Meat temp and the BBQ/Smoker temps.

Also, if you plan to do a lot of overnight smokes, it might be a good idea to invest in a Stoker (https://www.rocksbarbque.com/)or something similar.

If you are using the WSM, the top seal will let rain into the smoker. You need to find a way to prevent that. Also, I rig a foil shield over the top vent by crimping it to the handle.

A heavy rain will cool things down to the point you will need to open the bottom vents more thus using more fuel,

Wind is a bigger problem.

Maverick makes a couple models of wireless remote therms. I have the model listed in me signature which I like despite the relatively short range.

Rain down the vent(s) not good.
Maverick with remote in pocket VERY good. :)

Like I previously mentioned, if you don't have cover of some sort, I would recommend investing in one.

I am doing the same today, making pulled pork under rainy skies. We had hail here this morning even ! I agree wind is a worse problem for temp fluctuation, fortunately very little wind so temp control has not been a problem. I am under my deck on the walkout patio so it is not too bad.

I have had horrible luck with the wireless thermos, I went through 3 last summer with each one lasting about 2 weeks. Bought various brands all the $20 variety. I am looking for a wired prob that is not wireless to remove that point of failure. I am limping along with an oven thermo !

I will have an umbrella over the grill which should keep a lot of the rain off of the smoker. Are there any major brand name stores that sell these quality thermometers or will I have to order them online?

I would just order from the link I provided above, not sure of any big box stores that sell them.

Hey, there's an Oklahoma para-sail!!

I've got a roll-around prep area/sink that's got a slot for a patio umbrella. Works great unless the wind is howling.

I have retrieved this one from the neighbors yard a few times:tsk:, solved that with the pavers pictured here :thumb:

I don't think it's the wireless/wired feature that is your problem. The probes on the cheap ones burn out quickly and easily. The wire from the probe to the transmitter messes up also. On better ones you can by new probes if the go bad.

That why I like those heavy off set rain doesn't have any effect on them

I was hoping to do my first smoke on my CG tomorrow. It sounds like it's going to be mid 40s and possibly raining with wind around 10mph. Perhaps I should wait another week. Of course rain is predicted for next weekend too in the extended forcast...

I love my STOKER...it's the HEAT. It is better than anything else I have used. I can adjust and monitor the temps on my computer. It's real handy when it is cold. Good luck with your search. Here is the link for the Stoker

Also, I haven't had much problem with the rain as much as the cold. But I guess it would depend on type of smoker and air temps and wind. All of which can be a factor.

Good luck.

This was after a day of torrential thunderstorms... Can't let a little rain get in the way. I protected my Digi-Q power adapter and carried on.

Wow, I laughed out loud at the first line of your post Slick, I too am smoking in the rain (just started raining, I'm about an hour in). And I am using my Maverick digital thermo with remote receiver. So staying dry, even if the pit isn't.
