Well, we have had some great weather and it just seemed like the thing to do. Get everyone together and have some bugs. So, I had 20 lbs flown in and we went to town. Had 18 people over including the little ones so some ate bugs, corn, red potatoes, with some red beans and rice, others mac and cheese, LOL.
The boil:

And the eating, the best part:

It was a great time and a chance to ge caught up with some friends and family. Oh by the way, it was damn good even if I do say so myself, LOL.

Thanks everyone, they were good. It's the second year I've been ordering from them.

As for the boil, I just use the boil mixture they include with the bugs. I sometimes order an extra bag which is only a couple of bucks.

As for at table, they include some spices so you can coat the tails after they are peeled or you can jsut sprinkle all over the whole bugs and veggies. Since not everyone is of the same spice persuasion, I just put it in bowls and then add extra spices to each bowl. In mine, I added some smoked/ground Thai Dragon pepper powder that I make every year.

In closing, they suggest 2-3 lbs per person. For us, it's a bit more. My two borthers and I are more 4-5 and the other two guys in the pic like them but not huge fans so it works out pretty well. We were the only 5 eating them.

Actually, we do. I love that company. In fact, that's what we used for the red beans and rice.

I know you have some great stuff sown there but I'm not complaining in getting their stuff in Colorado.

Will be cooking for our local Rotary club in April for 300-500 people. Our 2 cookers can cook 1500 lbs each every 20-30 minutes.

For my friends and family i usually go with 5# per person, but they are a lot cheaper here:becky: This cold weather has really screwed up the season so far.

1funvet:

Watching these guys spend so much for crawfish makes me chuckle....until I remember how some of their beef and pork prices make ours seem like highway robbery!! lol

Bob: A 1fun said, supplies are running pretty low so make sure you call ahead to check availability at the restaurant before you go. If you need any help, drop me a pm and I can check a few for you when you get in town.

Crawfish are pretty scarce right now in S. Louisania , due to the weather . Live crawfish, if you can find them , are going for over 3.60 a pound .

Oldschool, for 20 lbs Live flown in, it's $125 right now. They include some spices as well as the boil. That includes shipping (FedEx) unless it's a Sat or Sunday delivery in which case, add $15.

Right now, they are kind of expensive as the season is just starting and the weather has been very cold for this time of year. So, it seems bugs are at a shortage of sorts.

They do adjust their prices during the season so they will get cheaper. Here's a page where you can get a sense and break it down per lb. More you order, cheaper per lb.

Hope that helps.

Wow on the prices. I think we pay about .69 a pound at HEB. Of course I'm picking them up in 35-40 lb bags with no spices included.

I have to agree with funvet, I'd still be a good bit hungry if we had that many folks going after 20lbs!

Thanks everyone, it is a great meal and my brothers and I all love it. We've been eating them for 15 years locally at resturants. It finally got to the point it was easier and cheaper after all was said and done to do it this way rather than go out for them. Factor in beers, tips, etc and it works out great.

This is the second year for DIY and I'll stick to it :-D Danny, only 5 of us eating them so we had our fill.

P.S. in fact, I proposed to my wife of 11 years over a platter of bugs :heh:
