Does anyone think it would be cool to set up a picture thread of just your UDS? I think it would be interesting to have everyone post there pics without one word about there cooker just a nice pic. I mean come on the UDS has well over a million hits so they are popular and most are completely different. If you want post them here and see what we get. Remember no words just pics. I'll start here's mine.

I think is might be helpful for many folks who are in the process of making a UDS to see pics of the various charcoal basket designs too, maybe just a small pic of the charcoal basket along with the pic of the UDS.

I'm sure there are lots of different designs out there.

My first UDS. I decided to do gas instead of charcoal, so a 4" burner is inside a 12" pan recessed on the bottom (why it has legs). I've seen some good ideas here, so I'll just say it's not quite finished.

Mine is a $6.99 candy thermometer from the local hardware store. It didn't have threads on the back so I mounted it just above a short stainless bolt and secured it inside the drum with a stainless hose clamp.

Just did the test burn yesterday. Went over 5 hours at 225-240. 4 of those hours were unattended! The uniflame top is not a perfect circle, I get a little bit of smoke leak out on the sides. Ive hammered it down as good as it will get. It will do untill I run across a weber top. I cant decide if im going to leave it ugly or paint it up.

added a top grate and a Weber lid:

a look at the inside: foil helps me to clean it better. To old to be bending over with my head in a drum doing hard work,

Did you paint those drums or is that some sort of wrap? They look sweet:cool:

I'm wondering this myself, simply the best "possible paint job" on a uds I've ever seen!!!!

I finally finished my drum. I read almost all of the Mother of all threads and I have to say THANK YOU to all of the Brethren who contributed to the thread. Unfortunatly my camera was acting up during the build but my son showed up with his camera during my seasoning run. The drum has double racks, 3 each 3/4" inlets with one controlled by a ball valve, 2 thermometer insertion points on the drum, and 1 thermometer on the lid.
I need to practice with it to master the temp control. It was a windy day so that didn't help but I was able to get it to stay pretty much between 250 and 300 with a lot of tending but like I said it was pretty windy.

I built a very simple version of the UDS. I just use a magnet for that air intake. It works great! The temperature holds very steady. I am glad I found this forum.:thumb:

I regret making holes for the temperature gauges. I mainly use my maverick et73. I also wish I would have taken my Weber lid to find a perfect drum fit. I had to cut the bottom out. It all worked out in the end.:-D

Here is mine:

I've added the ball valve on one lower intake and pipe nipples and caps on the other 2 intakes.

Just a couple questions. I just picked up a 34" tall drum, food grade, and a neighbor is taking it to work to have it sandblasted. My questions are:

1. Since it's being sandblasted, I'm assuming I don't need to do a burn, other than maybe taking an angle grinder to any paint remnants (probably none), right?

2. For the heat diffuser, does anyone use a pan filled with water, to allow for steam? Or just use something dry, just to defect too much direct heat?

3. I'm probably going to pick up three 8" pneumatic casters...are these too tall (could cause it to tip over). I was planning on making a dolly out of wood with sheet metal on top, like one a few pages/posts above.

Any problems with the wood burning on this UDS base?
