Help! My family tells me I am very hard to buy presents for, and I think it's getting worse. I'm 67 and pretty much anything I might want I go out and get.

So, I'm looking for great ideas that would be reasonable for wife and daughter to get me.

What unexpected gifts have you received that you just love?

Thermapen
Nice leather apron
Injector kit
If you have a bbq name they can make it into a sign
Bbq books (myron franklin tuffy etc
Knife sharpener
Bbq gloves
Sauce and rub combo kit from fav manufacturer
Steak/bbq month club
Knives

when buying for the man who has everything there are 2 options. go high end top of the line bespoke gifts....or consumables.

in terms of bbq things like rubs, sauces, or Maybe experiences like a gift card to a top notch place. instead people buy me things like tongs.... because I've been cooking out of doors for over 20 years and haven't found tongs I like yet....they say it's the thought that counts...well you didn't put much thought into this gift did you aunt Nancy?....farking Christmas

I'm the same way, though not nearly as old

Andy just posted a thread on dry aging...which made me think about supplies to take on a culinary project. Is there something you've been kinda curious about but haven't taken the leap on?

Dry aging-ask for those bags to age in the fridge.
Jerky-ask for seasoning and a dehydrator.
Fermenting-ask for weights and air locks.

It looks like there are a few places in Cincinnati to take a culinary class. Or I'd get a gift card to go exploring at Jungle Jims.

I'm with you on this. I basically have everything I need and want. Our family has been going for consumables the last 5 or so years. I send my brother steaks; he sends me steaks. I send my mom steaks; she sends me steaks. I send my uncle steaks; he sends me steaks. The nice thing is that I get to eat a lot of steak and my wife doesn't complain because it's a Christmas gift. Costco is great in this department. The great thing is that you aren't getting more junk to go on shelves, in drawers, or give to Goodwill. And people think, "Oh, he likes BBQing. I'll get him a [insert BBQ gift here]." Never give anyone something that is their hobby. They already have researched that up the whazzoo and know exactly what they want and don't want, and probably have everything they want already (unless it is more steak). You'll only be giving them something they already have or don't want. Just stick with steak and everyone's happy.

Aside: I know what you mean about finding the right tongs. For us it is spatulas, the kind you flip pancakes with. I found some I liked in the Hema department store in Amsterdam (sort of like a Dutch Kmart) of all places and bought 5 pair, but that is now 17 years ago and I'm down to my last pair. They were thin, hard plastic, no grooves or chit for food to get stuck in and had a small handle and didn't take up all a whole farkin' drawer -- seriously, why do they put such large handles on kitchen tools. Space is at a premium! They only cost about a dollar too because they were so simple. Anyway, I've been to Hemas many times since and they keep changing the design of these things. Fark, the old one was the best. Why do they have to ruin everything. Anyway, just stick with steak.

You only live once. Might as well add or take it off your bucket list. I would suggest sky diving. I bungie jumped 250 ft years ago, but i want to eventually sky dive. Im afraid flying, so its a challenge for me.

Thanks, and I applaud your courage. But I am never jumping out of a functioning aircraft.
